BASICS OF CONNECTION DESIGN & TYPES OF CONNECTIONS

Presented by: Structural Design Dept.

BASICS
GUIDING FACTOR: Type of structure, Design of Member and end conditions. End condition decide the type of force to be transferred through the connection. Basic formulas to calculate the capacities of connections Shear capacity = 0.4*fy*Aw .(Aw Area of web) Moment capacity = 0.66*fy*Zxx (Zxx Section modulous) Axial Capacity = 0.6*fy*A . (A- Area of section) Depending on type of structure and specifications, end connection are designed for member capacities (for e.g. Shear connection for 80%, Moment connection for 100% and axial connection for 80%)

End Connections Can Be Broadly Be Divided Into Three Types: 1.SHEAR 2.MOMENT 3.AXIAL

MOMENT CONNECTION OF AN I-BEAM

Welded connection Fillet welds Full penetration welds Compression transfer can also be accomplished through direct bearing

C = T

Resultant tension force T = M/d

MOMENT CONNECTION OF AN I-BEAM

Bending moment is carried mainly by the flanges Therefore connect flanges for moment transfer

TYPES OF MOMENT CONNECTION

Moment connections

Moment connections

SHEAR CONNECTION OF AN I-BEAM

Fillet welds in shear are commonly used Connect entire web and adjust weld size to suit shear load

SHEAR CONNECTION OF AN I-BEAM

Shear is carried mainly by the web Therefore connect the web for shear transfer
V

shear connection of an I-Beam

Bolted connections to transfer shear are commonly used Connect entire web to avoid stress concentrations and shear lag

AXIAL CONNECTION OF AN I-BEAM

Axial force is carried by the cross section area of section. Therefore connect the complete area of section to connecting member.

SPLICE CONNECTIONS
Splice connections for beams are mostly designed to carry moment and shear force. The location of splice should be such that the shear and bending moments are minimum. Column splices are mainly deisgned to carry full axial load or Moment or combination of both. The location of splice plays a very vital role in force transfer.

Few Basic Formulae

Strength of shop weld = 1100 x Ws x Wl To calculate weld size, = shear force / (1100xWl) all units Kg cm. For fillet weld, use multiplying factor of 0.707 for effective throat thickness. Multiply by 0.8 for site weld.
