PHILOSOPHY
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMAN BEING AND THE BUILDING BEING ESTABLISHED, WHAT DEVELOPS AND GROWS AROUND BECOMES A MEASURE FOR MAN AND HIS SOCIETY. IN THE OPERATIONAL REALITIES, IF AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO HIGHLIGHT THE IDEOLOGICAL POSTURES LEADING TO THE DIRECTIONS OF VALUE AS ACCEPTED IN ALL DESIGNDECISIONS RESULTING INTO TANGIBLE ARCHITECTURAL AMBIENT, THE EFFORTS ARE ALSO DIRECTED TOWARDS CREATING A PREFERENCE IN THE PUBLIC MIND FOR CONSUMPTION OF GOOD DESIGN IN THEIR DAY TO DAY LIVING. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMAN BEING AND THE BUILDING BEING ESTABLISHED, WHAT DEVELOPS AND GROWS AROUND BECOMES A MEASURE FOR MAN AND HIS SOCIETY. ARCHITECTURE PROVIDES US WITH OUR BASIC BIOLOGICAL NEEDS BUT ACTUALLY ITS REALMS GO MUCH FURTHER THAN THAT. MY SENSE OF CREATIVITY STEMS FROM WHAT I ADD FROM MY MIND. THERE ARE THE 3 'P'S OF ARCHITECTURE, NAMELY, THE PERSONALITY OF THE ARCHITECT, THE PRODUCT AND THE PLACE. THESE HAVE TO BE IN SYNERGY. PLACE- NOT JUST THE SITE BUT THE ENTIRE ENVIRONMENT. PEOPLE- THEIR VALUES, THERE ARE IN BUILT NEEDS AND DEMANDS IN HUMAN BEINGS WHICH ONE CANNOT IGNORE. PERSONALITY- THE Z FACTOR,THE ARCHITECTS OWN INTELLECTUAL ESSENCE, PERCEPTIONS, EXPERIENCES AND RESPONSES.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
U.C. JAINS WORK IS A CONVINCING DEMONSTRATION VISUALLY AND PHYSICALLY , OF HIS THEORIES AND ATTITUDES. A SALIENT ELEMENT IN HIS ATTEMPTS IS JAINS CONSISTENT PREFERENCES FOR LOCAL BUILDING MATERIALS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OVER FACTORY PRODUCED MATERIAL AND IMPORTED LABOUR.HE BELIEVED THAT THESE DEEDS ORIENTS THE BUILDING INDUSTRY TO ENERGY SAVING, LOW MANUFACTURING COSTS AND LESS TRANSPORTATION .
HIS WORKS ARE DIRECTED TOWARDS HARMONY WITH TRADITIONAL VALUES OF INDIA.
JAIN HAS DONE HISTORICAL STUDIES INTO INDIAN CITIES AND BUILDING. THUS BLENDS WITH THE RECENT TRENDS IN THE INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS WHICH AIM AT A MORE CONCRETE AND REALISTIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE LOCAL SITUATION.
JAIN WAS VERY INFLUENCED BY THE WORK OF CORBUSIER AND KAHN ON INDIAN SUB CONTINENT.
MATERIALS
GLASS: THE BUILDINGS LOOK BEAUTIFUL WITH THEIR GLASS FITTINGS BUT THEY ARE COLD IN THEIR APPEARANCE. THE TEMPERATURES INCREASE OWING TO GLASS AND AS A RESULT THE LOAD ON THE AIR-CONDITIONING INCREASES, LEADING TO AN INCREASE IN ELECTRICITY COSTS. CLIMATICALLY, GLASS DOES NOT SUIT OUR COUNTRY AND SHOULD BE USED SPARINGLY. FOR EG. :- BANDRA-KURLA COMPLEX STONE AND TILE: HE HAVE USED MANGALORE TILES IN THE AGA KHAN SCHOOL BECAUSE IT WAS APPROPRIATE IN A RURAL SETTING. HE LOVE THE USE OF STONE BECAUSE IT LENDS NATURAL COLOURS AND TEXTURES. HE HAVE USED LOCAL STONE IN ALL BUILDINGS IN THE JODHPUR UNIVERSITY, WHICH IS SPREAD OVER AN AREA OF 300 KM. PRICE AND VISUAL CONTEXT ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS IN MY CHOICE OF MATERIALS. WOOD: WOOD ALSO LENDS A NATURAL LOOK TO A STRUCTURE. I HAVE USED BAMBOO AND CHATAI IN THE GUESTHOUSE OF THE SEVA GRAM IN WARDHA. I HAVE ALSO MADE USE OF HANDMADE BRICKS AND MANGALORE TILES. GRANITE : THIS MATERIAL IS VERY HEAVY AND IT FALLS OFF IF IS NOT PROPERLY FITTED, SO IT HAS TO BE USED WITH A LOT OF CAUTION.
YEAR OF COMPLETION: LECTURE THEATRE - 1971 ART AND SOCTAL SCIENCE BLOCK -1985 AREAS: LECTURE HALL-680 sqm CANTEEN-330 sqm ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE BLOCK-6970 sqm PLANNING STRUCTURES IS DESIGNED KNITTING TOGETHER ALL THE COMPONENTS RESPECTING THE NEED OF LABOUR INTENSIVE DESIGN , ECONOMY AND CLIMATE. STONE SERVED AS THE PRIMARY BUILDING MATERIAL WHICH MAKES A STRONG IMPRINT ON THE ENVIRONMENT. STANDARD 3.5 M LONG SLABS USED AS SPANNING MEMBERS IN FLOORS AND ROOFS.

THE STRAIGHT FORWARD DESIGN APPROACH PLUS ITS FRUGAL FAADE MAKE THE DESIGN APPROPRIATELY COST EFFECTIVE. IN ESSENCE ,THIS EDIFIC ABIDES BY THE DICTUM LESS IS MORE. IT IS AN AFFIRMATION OF BELIEF IN TRADITIONAL WISDOM OF A PLACE . THE USE SOLELY OF STONE IN MAKING THIS BUILDING RELATES IT TO ITS IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS WITHOUT STRAIN.
A SMALL ZIGGURAT LIKE STRUCTURE. EACH HALL RECTANGULAR PLAN WITH STONE SLAB SUPPORTED ON INTERMEDIATE RCC BEAMS RESTING ON 2 PARALLEL WALLS ALONG ITS LONGER AXIS. THIS LOAD BEARING STONE CONSTRUCTION GIVES THE BUILDING A RIGOROUS ORDER AND HAS GENERATED ITS BASIC FORM AS WELL AS SCALE. THE BUILDING IS ENTERED BY A RAMP HOUSED BETWEEN BLOCKS RECALLING THE SLOPING STREETS AND SOARING CASTLE WALLS OF INDIAN DESERT TOWNS. SANDSTONE IS THE PRIMARY BUILDING MATERIAL.

TWO TOWERS WITH SIX FLOORS EACH. ONE OFFICE ON EVERY FLOOR MEASURING 15000 SQUARE FEET ,INDIVIDUAL AC FITTINGS AND OTHER AMENITIES
FOR THE FUTURISTIC LOOK UC JAIN PROPOSED TO STRUCTURALLY GLAZE, THE TWO TOWERS IN CLASSIC BLUE REFLECTIVE GLASS AND COMPLEMENT IT WITH RED GRANITE CLADDING OF BOTH THE TOWERS
THE BASIC IDEA WAS TO USE MATERIALS LIKE GLASS AND METAL THOSE ARE MAINTENANCE FREE. THE ALUMINUM ANODIZED RAILINGS, WINDOWS, GRANITE FLOORING AND STAIRCASE, TILE CLAD LOBBY AND VITRIFIED TILES ON THE COMPOUND WALL HAVE BEEN USED KEEPING THAT IN MIND. CONTINUING IN THE MINIMALISTIC VEIN, THE ARCHITECT HAS PROVIDED CLEAR SPACE UNCLUTTERED BY TOO MANY COLUMNS.
FOUR LARGE CIRCULAR COLUMNS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED TO BEAR THE WEIGHT OF THE BUILDING IN ADDITION TO THE RCC STRUCTURAL FRAME. A FLAT SLAB WAS DEVISED TO GET AN EVEN FINISH. "SOLID, GEOMETRICAL FORMS IS THE BASIC TENET OF BUILDING DESIGN, IT ENHANCES THE UTILITY OF AVAILABLE SPACE AND PROVIDES VISUAL SYMMETRY AS WELL

MURAL ON THE DOUBLE HEIGHT CITY GATE INVITES THE VISITORS TO SMALL SUNLIT PLACE ENCOMPASSED BY INTENSELY BUILT STEPS WHICH MAKE THE BACKDROP STRUCTURES RISE REALISTICALLY. WATER AS A LANDSCAPE ELEMENT IS USED THROUGHOUT BY FOUNTAINS IN FOYER AND LOBBIES.
ALONG THE SOUTH EAST BANK OF THE RIVER CHAMBLE. THE COMPLEX, WITH A BUILT UP AREA OF 2,45,000 SqM. PREDOMINANTLY RESIDENTIAL IN NATURE.
THE CAMPUS LAY-OUT CAN BROADLY BE DIVIDED INTO THREE MAIN ZONES THE ACADEMIC
FACULTY HOUSING
STUDENTS HOSTEL. THE TOPOGRAPHICAL CONDITIONS, AN INTER RELATIONSHIPS & THE FUNCTIONING OF THE ZONES IS CONSIDER WHILE PLANNING. THE MAIN CONCEPT REVOLVES AROUND THE PRINCIPLES INTERACTION AT EVERY STAGE & MAN ON FOOT
HOSTEL
THERE ARE 3 SINGLE-SEATED BOYS HOSTELS (CAPACITY OF 325). 1TRIPLE-SEATED BOYS HOSTEL (CAPACITY OF 192). AND 1GIRL STUDENTS HOSTEL (CAPACITY OF108). HOSTEL ROOMS ARE WELL FURNISHED. EVERY HOSTEL HAS TV ROOM, TT ROOM, MESS AND OTHER RECREATION FACILITIES.
STUDENT AMENITIES
COLLEGE HAS ONE HUGE BUILDING WHICH HAS GYMNASIUM IS WELL EQUIPPED AND TWO COVERED BADMINTON COURTS. THERE IS A FOOTBALL GROUND AND AN ATHLETIC TRAC TO ENCOURAGE SPORTING ACTIVITIES IN THE INSTITUTE.
