In traditional on-premise applications, this type of data would ordinarily be maintained on SAN or NAS. In comparison, cloud based mechanism such as Amazon is far more agile, flexible and geo-redundant. Amazon S3 is highly scalable, durable and available distributed object store designed for mission-critical and primary data storage with an easy to use web service interface.

Web service which provides real-time look up and querying of structured data. Easy to use when compared to relational database. Works in conjunction to EC2 and S3.

Burden in individual organisation to have a database admin is reduced.

Intermediate data message storage system. Developers were able to move data between distributed application components in a reliable manner.
