 Fitment of Larger non-approved Tyres

• Caterpillar warranty covers defective

workmanship and materials NOT component
or structural failures resulting from fitting
larger non-approved tyres.
• Typical Reasons For Larger Tyre Request
– TKPH (travel distance, travel speed, load)
– Ambient Temperature
– Shortages in certain tyre size classes (recent)
• Standard tyres act as a payload management
FUSE.

 Tyre Weight Reduces Target Payload

• Empty Machine Weight impacts ROPS.

• Payload relates to steering & brake certifications.
• Entire truck gross machine weight must be
stopped and park brake must hold.
• Refer to Caterpillar 10/10/20 Payload Policy.
• It can be a SAFETY issue.
• “Unsprung weight” is NOT an acceptable position.

• Gross Machine Weight IS FIXED
• Empty Machine Weight (Tare) includes:
– All attachments
• Factory

– Full tank of fuel
– Debris (2% - 4% of bare chassis tare weight)

• Target Payload = GMW - EMW

 Unsprung Weight?
• All additional TARE Weight must be accounted for.
• TARE Weight + Target Payload = Fixed GMW
Impacts on GMW Certification.
– Braking Certification – More braking force is required to stop the
higher inertia. Park brake must hold a certified stationary mass on a
specified grade. Location of additional mass is irrelevant.
– Steering Certification – The gyroscopic impact of a larger weight
spinning at large diameter makes steering more difficult and harder
to change directions.
– If the additional 5 tonnes of rim / tyre weight has no impact on target
payload then what about the first 40 tonnes of rim / tyre weight?

 Items to Consider with Two Piece

• Weight of tyre and decrease in target payload

• No recommendation from Caterpillar
• Clearance – Does the tyre grow dynamically more
than a normal tyre and exceed the tyre
envelope?
• Is there relative movement between the tread
and carcass?
– If there is relative movement there must be wear
– Wear / degradation might cause problems with tread
belt retention
• “Size Effects” Test results are different between
51" new issues with the 45R57.

 Closing Comments

• It is necessary to examine all of the

potential interference and clearance in the
worst case scenarios (collapsed struts, full
turn, etc).
• Field retrofits fail to take into account all of
the possible geometric tolerance allowance
for the entire machine and look at worst
case interference issues.
