of Delhi sultanate
located just 58 km. south
east of the varanasi.

Characteristics of architecture
in Jaunpur
1. ATALA Mosque
The Jaunpurs Atala Mosque was
built by Sultan Ibrahim (1401-
1440), Sharqi Sultan of Jaunpur
foundations laid during the
reign of Tughluqk Sultan Firuoz
Shah III (1351-1388).
Though the emergence of this
mosque dates back to 1377 A.D.,
the construction work was
completed in the year 1408
1. Atala name is derived from
atala devi temple.

2.The Mosque was built on
foundation of the temple.
3.Later the temple was
discarded to make way for
the mosque.

Mosque
The Jami Mosque,
Jaunpur (also known
as the 'Bari
Mosque') was built in
the year 1470, under
the last ruler of the
Sharqi Dynasty,
named Hussain
Shah.
Jami Mosque,
Jaunpur bear a great
deal of resemblance
with those mosques
that were built
during the reign of
Firoz Shah Tughlaq
of the Tughlaq
Dynasty of Delhi
Sultanate.

MAIN FAADE,
JAMA Mosque
The double arched, pylon-
shaped gate at the entrance
presents a majestic sight to
the onlookers.
The long steps leading to
the front gate is also good
to view.
The main portal lies in the
focal point of the facade
and stands about 26 meters
tall and measures nearly 24
meters at the base.
This was again a
characteristic feature of the
mosques built by the
Sharqis.

Jama Mosque at Jaunpur
that any of the other
Holy Places in Jaunpur
will find hard to match,
are the gorgeous
decorations that are
visible on the walls on
the interior and the
exterior portions of the
mosque.

3. LAL DARWAJA
Mosque
The Lal Darwaza
Mosque in Jaunpur, India
in around 1450 A.D.
The mosque was built
along with the palace of
Bibi Raja, who was the
Queen of Sultan
Mahmood Sharqi, a ruler
of the Sharqi Dynasty.
The Lal Darwaza
Mosque, Jaunpur was
formed to serve as a
private mosque of the
Queen.

INTERIOR VIEW
Unlike the Atala
Mosque, Jaunpur, the
Jaunpur Lal Darwaza
Mosque was a much
smaller representation.
However the latter
resembled the former on
many counts.

SCHOOL
Bibi Raja also
established a religious
school in the area
surrounding the Lal
Darwaza in Jaunpur for
all the local Muslim
residents. The school (or
Madrasa) was named
Jamia Hussainia and it
exists till date.

Lal Darwaza Mosque,
Jaunpur got its name
from the fact that the
gateway at the entrance
of the mosque was
painted red in color
from the very beginning
and still remains intact
