National Land Use Policy of Sri Lanka
The national land use policy will provide an appropriate policy framework for land resource
management of Sri Lanka

The national land use policy will not only provide a path for the protection, conservation and
sustainable use of the land resources of the country but also offer an appropriate and ideal
framework that will best meet the needs of present generation while safeguarding the land
resources for the future generation as well.
Objectives of the Land Use Policies
Prioritize agriculturally oriented uses
Expand the role of the state in land related matters
Prevent under use and improper use
Promote the capacity of the land
Rational allocation of land for different purposes
Protect, conserve and manage all sources of water
A rational distribution of population and settlement

Objectives of the Land Use Policies
Minimization fragmentation of agricultural land
Prevention of encroachment of lands
Introduce effective tenure reforms to promote efficient use of land resources
To minimize the vulnerability of land to natural and human induced hazards
Promote land uses that minimize environmental hazard
Promote gender equity in the ownership, utilization and conservation of
lands
Conserve bio-diversity
Preserve historical, cultural, religious and aesthetic values associated with
lands

Institutions providing services/facilities for land use will be strengthened
The diverse land laws prevalent at present will be reviewed
Under utilized and unutilized land will be made available for proper development
purpose
