(Case Study)
STATE BANK OF INDIA (Gandhidham)
Venue: SBI Building

Place: GANDHIDHAM

Building type : 1) Office G+2 with basement
2) Housing colony G+2

Structure Type : Frame structure

Repair work : Hariom Builder

Synopsis:

Assessment of damage

By knowing following important criteria Consultant will assess
the remaining strength of the structure.

So Consultant will come to know how far the final strength of
Structure is.

(1) Compressive strength of concrete
(2) Spalling of concrete
(3) Cracking
(4) Effects of aggregate type
(6) Effect upon reinforcing steel

Observations
S.B.I. Branch & Housing Colony and visited on
22/5/01 and Consultant s observations, Methodology &
Conclusions are as stated below.

Housing colony for State Bank Of India is
consisting of G.F+2 Storey Structure with one A-type
Block ( 12 units ), Two B-type Block ( 24 units ) and
Two C-type Block ( 12 units ) with watchman cabin ,
Electric Sub Station and U.G. Tank.

Structural drawings were not available but it seems
that as per site conditions building is Provided with
RCC frame structure and masonry infill walls

As structural detail were not available and based on
NDT test we assumed the strength of existing
concrete minimum and steel reinforcement 1 % of the
cross sectional area.
Consultant also found that shear resistance of beam is
not sufficient. As per site conditions retrofitting is
essential and we suggest strengthening of column as
per analysis.

A close visual inspection of the affected members
with "soundings" done with light hammer reveals a
great deal of information on the condition of the
members.
Visual Inspection
The assessment of damage to various structural
components established procedures :

(i) Debris inspection
(ii) Visual inspection of affected members
(iii) Insitu Field Testing: Non-Destructive Tests (NDT)
(a) Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV)
(b) Concrete Cores.
Procedures
Damages:

In building cracks found in almost all infill walls on
Ground Floor, as well as majority at First Floor.

Found settlement in floor in all building in Ground Floor.

There are Some diagonal cracks (shear cracks) observed
in beam also.

In column ,different shaped column are damaged ,spalling
of concrete and cracks also observed.

At beam column junction ,found cracks also.
Scope of consultant :

(i) To prepare Tender document
(ii) To assess the extend of structural damage to R.C.C
elements of the building
(iii) To arrive at the residual strength of concrete and
reinforcing steel
(iv) To prepare the Detail Structural drawings

Remedial Measures / Retrofitting
After analysis of existing building, It was observed that
strength of the column is less compare to strength of
the beam.
Hence recommended retrofitting of column and
retrofitting work of beam also by providing sufficient
steel for the ductility of the structure.
For the action of the monolithic structure, consultant
has suggested removal of old plaster, applying bonding
agent and Anchor fasteners.
As it was observed that shear capacity of beam is not
sufficient and hence we recommend to provide additional
stirrups to beam
The estimated cost of retrofitting of building is Rs.
1,12,00,000/- which is approximately Rs. 325/- Sqft

Rate of cost of new construction will be Rs. 525/- Sqft To
Rs. 550/- Sqft i.e. Rs. 1,80,00,000/- to Rs. 2,00,00,000/-
and demolishing cost will be additional in new construction

Considering the feasibility of structural repairs and
restoration and also the time and cost involved in the total
reconstruction programmed and also the urgency of
making it available for major events, it was decided to
rehabilitate and renovate the building with modernization
of the service facilities.
Feasibility restoration

Different repairs and the repair
techniques adopted are given below

Class I: General
Non-structural or minor structural repairs like
restoring cover to reinforcement using cement
based polymer modified mortar, using cement-
polymer slurry as bonding layer and nominal light
fabric reinforcement or using epoxy mortar over
the primary coat of epoxy primer.

Where concrete strength is significantly reduced,
strengthening to be carried out with shotcreting in case of
slabs and jacketing beams and columns.

The bonding material used shall be epoxy formulation.
Additional reinforcement shall be provided in accordance
with load carrying requirements of the member. Both
residual and final strength to be checked by design
procedure.

Sealing of structural cracks by epoxy grout injection.
Sealing of Honey combed portions by cement grouting
