WHAT IS NFC ?

NFC or near field communication is a short range
wireless communication technology.
A radio communication is established by touching
two phones or keeping them of a proximity of a few
centimeters.
NFC is mainly aimed for mobile or handled device.
NFC is an extension of Radio Frequency
Identification or RFID technology.
Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is the use of
radio waves to read and capture information stored on
a tag attached to an object.

EVOLUTION OF NFC
TECHNOLOGY
In 2004 NFC Forum was formed by Nokia, Philips,
Sony to set standards for NFC. Every NFC enabled
device will have N-Mark trademark, developed by
NFC forum.

EVOLUTION OF NFC
TECHNOLOGY
In 2006
First mobile phone (Nokia 6131) with NFC released by
NOKIA.
EVOLUTION OF NFC
TECHNOLOGY
In 2010
First android phone SAMSUNG NEXUS S with NFC
support released.
OPERATION OF NFC
NFC works with two terminals
1.Initiator
2.Target
The initiator actively generates RF field that can power
a passive target.

OPERATION OF NFC

NFC is based on inductive coupling.
NFC works using magnetic induction between two
loop antennas.
Operating frequency 13.56 MHz and data rate varies
from 106Kbits/s to 424Kbits/s.
For two devices to communicate using NFC, one
must have an NFC reader/writer and one must have
an NFC tag. The tag is essentially an integrated
circuit containing data connected to an antenna that
can read and written by the reader.

OPERATION OF NFC

Card Emulation Mode
Card emulation mode enables NFC-enabled
devices to act like smart cards, allowing users to
perform transactions such as purchases, ticketing,
etc with just a touch.

OPERATION OF NFC

Peer to Peer Mode
Peer to Peer Mode enables two NFC-enabled devices to
communicate with each other to exchange information
and share file.

OPERATION OF NFC
Reader/Writer Mode
Reader/Writer mode enables NFC-enabled devices to
read data or information stored in NFC tags embedded
in smart poster.
MODES OF OPERATION
Modes of
operation
Active mode Passive mode
MODES OF OPERATION
In active mode, both devices with NFC chip generates
an electromagnetic field and then exchange data.
In this mode both devices typically have power
supplies.
MODES OF OPERATION
In passive mode there is only one active device and
other device uses that field to exchange information.
APPLICATIONS OF NFC
Applications of NFC can be split into the following
three basic categories:

Touch and Go
Touch and Confirm
Touch and Connect

APPLICATIONS OF NFC
Touch and Go
Applications such as access control or transport/event
ticketing, where the user only to bring the device
storing
the ticket or access code close to the reader. Example
for picking up an internet URL from a smart label on
poster.

APPLICATIONS OF NFC
Touch and Confirm
Applications such as mobile payment where the user
has to confirm the interaction by entering a
password or just accepting the transaction.

APPLICATIONS OF NFC
Touch and Connect
Linking two NFC-enabled devices to enable peer to
peer transfer of data such as downloading music or
songs, exchanging images.
ADVANTAGES OF NFC
No special software
High convenience to the user, because the data exchange is
done by bringing two mobiles together.
Secure communication.
Ease of use.
NFC can be used together with existing technologies like
Bluetooth and thus act for longer range also.
DISADVANTAGES OF NFC
The system has the limitation that it can be operated only with
devices under short range i.e.around 10cm.
The data transfer rate is very less at about 106kbps,212kbps
and 424kbps.

SOME DEVICES USING
NFC TECHNOLOGY

Samsung Galaxy S II
Google Nexus S 4G
Samsung Galaxy Note
Nokia 6212 classic
