What materials provide step-by-step
preparation unlike Past Papers?

There are two types of materials:
Type 1 paper by paper approach for fast and
focused exam preparation
Type 2 aimed at learning Academic English
together with IELTS preparation at a slower pace
Type 1 materials: paper by paper approach for fast
and focused exam preparation
Examples of test tips
Listening: The answers will come in question order on the
recording.
Reading: Underlining the main idea in each paragraph will
help guide you to the information you need to find.
Reading: Even if you believe the answer is NOT TRUE
according to your knowledge and experience, you must
find the evidence in the passage.
Writing: When you write your introduction, avoid copying
whole phrases from the question Using appropriate
linkers is important but dont start every sentence with one
Speaking: If you give very short answers, you will lose
scores. Aim to give 2-4 sentences for each answer.
Type 2 IELTS preparation materials are organised by themes
for learning Academic English in combination with IELTS
preparation at a slower pace

IELTS Academic Reading Passages



The passages used in the test are designed to
present the candidate with materials similar to
those which they might need to read on a
university course.
The passages may be written in a variety of
styles, for example narrative, descriptive,
discursive or argumentative.
They are not simplified
Features of IELTS passages
authentic
discipline-related
international but neutral
demonstrate a number of writer techniques
well written: argument, embedded clauses, formal
language and structures, discourse markers
Some general reading skills IELTS candidates need:
Ability to skim the passage to get an overview
of its contents
This helps them to
- see how the passage develops (its structure)
- locate the specific information they require
Other general reading skills IELTS candidates need:
Ability to scan the passage
- to find specific information
- to locate the section of the passage that they need
to read in detail

Before they read the passage, students should
be trained to read
- the title
- the sub-heading
- and look at any pictures, illustrations, or footnotes
