Libraries perform a range of functions in society.

Academic Libraries to obtain, collect and store literature for
education and research purposes.

Site location-
HIMGIRI ZEE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, DEHRADUN

Site Area-
2400 sq.m (approx.) for Library block.

Factors to be considered to Design a Library-
The size of library depends on the no. of student. And no. of
students depends on courses offered by university.
Circulation routes > 1.2m wide.

The clear space between book shelves at least 1.3- 1.4m wide.
Avoid crossing and over lapping of routes for users, staff and
book transportation.

Avoid direct sun light, since UV and heat radiation destroy
paper and bindings.
Area for a student for reading- 2.5m

Space for a PC or individual work 4.0m

Floor loading with fixed book stacks at least 7.5N/m
2

Room height should be 3.0m.
Security is vitally important in user areas.

Fire precautions must apply with national and local building
regulation and procedures.
The installation of a book security system will prevent theft.

If possible only one entrance and exit is provide.
For functional reasons, the control gates should be near the
lending desk or central information desk.

Access to the operational areas and reading rooms on different
floors should be by staircase, but lift must also be provided for the
use of disabled students and for book transport.



Floor loadings in the operational and reading areas should be
5.0N/m

Floor loadings in the administration and book-processing areas
should be > 5.0N/m2

Library should be proper natural lighting and ventilation.
Future Extension of library should be keeping in mind.

Analysis of no. of students per courses offered by
University-
We have considered to 40 students per courses per year in
Bachelor level and 20 students in Masters level.

Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning-
360 students (B.Arch, B.IDS, M.Arch, M.Tech Planning)
Faculty of Education-
150 students (B.Ed, M.Ed, M.Philosophy, Phd in Philosophy)
Faculty of Expressive Culture, Media & Communication-
320 students (MA mass com and Intrigate MA mass com, PG Diploma in MA
mass com and Journals, Diploma in Radio Jockeying and Production, Diploma
in TV Production)
Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology-
500 students (B.Tech in CS and IT, BCA, PGDCA, M.Tech in CS and IT, MCA)


Faculty of Management and Technology-
680 students (B.Tech in CE, ME and EE, BBA, M.Tech in CE,
ME and EE, and MBA)
Faculty of Law-
200 students

Total no of students-
360+150+320+500+680+200= 2210 student
It is assume no. of students in per courses it may
varies according to university rules and council.
