EXPERIMENT 5 ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE
DETERMINING DENSITY OF
METAL BLOCK
1. A regular shaped metal block is used. We use this instead of an irregular shaped
object to make it easier for us to measure its dimension and calculate its volume.
2. An electronic balance was used to determine the mass of the metal block, with
uncertainty.
3. A vernier caliper was used to measure the dimensions of the metal block that we
selected. Its volume was calculated by using the appropriate formula for volume
calculation of a cube. After that the density of the metal block was computed
together with its uncertainty. This is the direct measurement value.

4. For determining the density of metal block by
using Archimedes principle, the apparatus was set up
as shown in Figure 1 on the left.
5. The weight of the metal block in the air was
measured by using Newtons balance.
6. The beaker was filled enough with tap water. The
position of the metal block which was hanged on top
of the beaker was adjusted until the metal block is
fully submerged under water..

7. The weight of the metal block in the water (apparent weight) was
found out while making sure our eye sight was perpendicular to the
Newtons balance while reading the weight.
8. By applying Archimedes principle, knowing that the volume of
water displaced equal to the volume of the metal block, and by using
back the mass from step 2, the density of the metal block with its
uncertainty was determined.
9. The percentage difference between the results of direct
measurement and Archimedes principle was calculated.
Conclusions were given.

DETERMINING DENSITY OF
PARAFFIN OIL
1. To determine the density of paraffin oil, the tap water in the beaker just now was replaced
with paraffin oil (of course!).
2. The experiment was repeated by hanging the same metal block on top of the beaker,
measuring its weight in air and then by submerging it completely in the paraffin oil.
3. The density of the paraffin oil is calculated along with its uncertainty. The density is given
by the difference between the Newtons balance reading before and after the immersion of the
metal block(buoyancy force); divided by the volume of the metal block (which we already knew)
times gravitional force, g which is equal to 9.81 ms

.
4. The percentage error between this experiments result with the standard density of paraffin
given in Table 1 in the Post-Lab Questions sections was calculated. Conclusions were stated.
