AMONG INDUSTRIAL
WORKERS

Research Details
Respondents : Blue collar workers from 8
companies
Data collected through personal Interviews
Firm as unit of analysis, these companies
were ranked in terms of job satisfaction of their
workers;
then in terms of certain characteristics and
attributes of workers and firms.
And, factor related to demographic and socio-
economic background of workers failed to
predict the job satisfaction ; all correlated to
experiences of worker relating to his work life.

Research Techniques used
Use of multivariate analysis
Answers to following questions through partial and
multiple correlations and applied by regression
analysis

Are the associations between job satisfaction and
the factors listed above genuine or due to their
association with one or more variables ?
What is relative contribution of each factor in
explaining the variation in job satisfaction ?
Which cluster explains most of the variation in job
satisfaction ?

Variables Used
Job Satisfaction
Using 18 item scale developed by brayfield & rothe
Each item =5 ; Score range = 18 to 90
Average for a firm for ranking
Monthly income
Average monthly income of worker in firm
Work technology
Using five item list by pooling responses
Do not work too fast ; does not leave them too tired;
enable to use full capacities; chance to try out new
ideas;
change work methods if desired

Variables Used
contd.
Occupational Aspirations
Highest job he can achieve
Money at highest job achieved
5. Recruitment policy
Influence in getting job in company, 4 point scale
Most; fairly; not much ; and not at all important
6. Union Involvement
Percentage who considered unions necessary;
who currently members of a union; who voted in
last election of union

So using multiple
correlation, 98%
of variation in job
satisfaction is
collectively
explained by five
determinants
chosen for study
But still five
variables are also
significantly
correlated to one
another

Summery of table 3 is

Visually ,
Best predictor : Union involvement
Worst predictor : Monthly income
Prediction factors : 6-5-3-4-2

To counter check statistically , multiple partial
coefficient is calculated and order of prediction
remains the same
Further more, fourth order partial correlations gives
the same with negative signs for variable 2 & 4.
So, by dropping variable 2 & 4, prediction power is
lost marginally to 97.9%
Beta coefficients are calculated by keeping two
variables constant amongst 1, 3, 5, 6.
It confirmed that variables 3, 5, 6 account for 96%
variation in job satisfaction with variable 5(recruitment
policy) playing role of multiplier effect
Limitation : small sample size

Findings

10
1. When certain external factors are controlled,
then income and occupational aspirations are
the main two factors negatively affecting job
satisfaction
2. Rational and objective recruitment policies
have positive effects on employee attitudes.
3. Union involvement : dual loyalty
4. Work technology : definite effect ; job
redesign before any large scale project
