Research and Development of Neem in

Bangladesh

Neem (Azadirachta indica) native to
Indian subcontinent and now are
available in the most tropical and
sub-tropical countries, in Africa and
Middle East.

Introduction

We have started Neem movement in
1987 in Bangladesh. Unfortunately the
devastating floods destroyed the whole
plantation in 1988. The movement has
again started in 1989 and moving very
smoothly.

Introduction

Bangladesh Neem Foundation is
promoting Neem as poverty reduction,
environmental protection and health
benefits. Neem is becoming very
popular in the country now.

Introduction

Plantation: Government has adopted a
policy to plant 5% Neem of all
government tree plantation activities.
Department Forest and Department of
Agricultural Extension ( DAE) has
developed Neem nurseries for their own
plantation.
Government Initiatives
Research: Bangladesh Council of
Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR),
Ministry of Science and Technology is
involved in products development
especially cosmetics and toiletries.
Bangladesh Forest Research Institute
(BFRI), Ministry of Environment and Forest
is involved in breed development.

Bangladesh Neem Foundation (BNF), an apex
body of all related organizations and persons
involved in research and development has
built collaborative partnership with- BCSIR,
BFRI, Bangladesh Tea Research Institute
(BTRI) for research on pesticides, fertilizers
and cosmetics.


Non-Government Initiatives

BNF has also partnership with
Bangladesh Rural Advancement
Committee (BRAC), the largest tea estate
in Asia for nursery development,
Cultivation and primary processing.

Non-Government Initiatives

BNF has so far distributed 2.6 million Neem
saplings from their own nursery and have 409
associate members all over the country and
has transferred primary technologies to 9600
farmers and they are doing well. Neem
became important cash crop to the farmers.

Plantation:

BNF has developed research partnership with
Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and
has developed Neem based pesticides and
fertilizers. The products are being limited use
in nursery sectors, tea estate, field crops and
medicinal plants cultivations. They have
research and collaborative partnership with
BSCIR,BFRI,BTRI, and BAU.

Research:

BNF is planting Neem with the
collaboration and partnership with
NGOs, Research organizations,
Academies, Government departments,
civil societies and entrepreneurs.

collaboration and partnership with NGOs,

and entrepreneurs.
Extension Activities:
BNF has so far developed 39 Neem based
formulations and transferred to Neem
Laboratories (Pvt.) Ltd and Neem Kimya
Laboratories (www.neembd.com,
www.neemkimya.com). The products are
available in the domestic market and exporting
to Japan. Neem based products are becoming
popular in the country.
Formulations and Products
Development
BNF is developing supply chain in the country
both raw materials and finished goods with the
experience of a partnership project of Food and
Agricultural Organization( FAO) of the United
Nations, Common Fund For Commodities( CFC)
of Netherlands, International Centre for
Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD),
Nepal and the Ministry of Commerce,
Government of Bangladesh.
Supply Chain Management
No regulatory authority and
standards of Neem products
developed in the country.
Standard:
So far our knowledge, nine patents have
been registered and five are under
process. There are 93 trade marks have
been applied and under process of
registration.
Intellectual Property (IP):
BNF in collaboration with IPR agents and
entrepreneurs are trying to establish
different brand like Dr. Neem Hakims
Neem and Banga Neem etc.
Brand Establishment:
Regulatory Authority is an urgent need.

Need adequate attention of government,
scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs must get subsidies for
promotional activities.
