ENGINEERING DESIGN
Design Process
A methodology which requires a
logical, sequential analysis of the
design problem to be solved.

Set out in stages which helps us to
progressively develop a solution to
the problem set.

The best solution given the by the
technology available at the time.
In reality we produce products which satisfy an
immediate need as the customer wants it yesterday.
Major innovation in design and manufacture require
us to look into new materials, manufacturing
technologies and potential markets to look into the
future

From this -------------------------------------------------- to this
Design Process
In engineering we use the design
process to provide solutions to
problems by applying a logical set of
stages.
In reality these are usually reduced in
length because of;
Previous experience / knowledge
Custom and practice
What the competition are doing

Design Process
Phases of the Design Process
Identification of Need
Usually recognized through a
feeling of uneasiness, sensing
something that is not right, etc.

Example : A room that is not
comfortable, hot, small --- so
we NEED to do something
about it!
Definition of Problem
More specific that the needs.
Includes all the specifications for the object to be
designed.
Specifications are the I/O qty.,characteristics,
dimensions of space to be occupied and all limit
on the quantities.
Specifications define the costs, qty to be
manufactured, expected life, range,operating
temperature and reliability.
Specified characteristic include speeds, feeds,
temperature limits, max range, expected
variations in variables, dimension, weight, etc.
Synthesis
Also known as invention of the concept or
concept design.
Various concepts must be proposed, investigated
and quantified.

Analysis and optimization
Analysis must be done to the concept to know its
performance.
If performance is satisfactory, how well it will
perform?
If performance is not satisfactory it will be
revised, improve or discarded.

Evaluation
Final proof of a successful design.
Usually involves the testing of a prototype.
Discover if the design really satisfies the needs.
and more questions and considerations need to be done
when designing..
Presentation
Presentation is a selling job.
When presenting, you need to prove that your
product or solution is a better one.
Good ideas and solution can turn into waste if
cant present and prove it the right way!
At the end the product can be either accepted,
rejected or revised.
