property
or money brought by a bride to her
husband
on their marriage.

Then
It was started by wealthy businessmen, kings and other
influential people of the society as a means to give girls
their due in the ancestral property.

Today dowry is given as compensation to the grooms
parents for the amount they have spent in educating and
upbringing their son.

We have seen that the govt
has been successful in passing
anti dowry laws.
But according to surveys and
reports they have been
unsuccessful in curbing this
menace. Crimes are on a step
rise when it comes to dowry
related cases.
Strategies to work out the dowry trap are
inherently political in nature and cannot
be isolated from the context of womens
lives, their entitlements or from ideological
struggles over gender relations.
It calls for concerted action from the state,
NGOs and especially from the womens
movement, active support of a womens
family as well as responsibility on the part
of men to understand the wrongness in
such practices.

the best as the time has changed and it is
time that education has more value in the
employment market and fields have been
opened for women to become

It is high time each one of us should make
sure not to encourage this practice, if we
choose to call ourselves educated, aware
& moral, and seeking for spirituality.

A more sophisticated public image of
an extended gifting session has
replaced the old system. This situation
is a very modern one and even takes
place in very educated households.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
There are demands for household
gifts, huge expenses have to be
incurred by the brides family to
