Biology: A
Presentation on
BIOMES
Prepared by: Emmanuel Ryan P. Francisco, RN
What are BIOMES?
Are Major climax formations of
ecosystem around the world.
It indicates relationship of
climatic conditions and the type
of dominant plants and animals
S S R G A D L N A
Covers more than 1/5
of the Earths surface
Also known as
savannah, veld prairies
and meadows
Home to large herds
of grazing animals,
each eats different
types of grass
SSDRTE
About 1/8 of the land area
of the world
It is dry and arid
Average of 250mm of rain
per year
Animals survives by
sleeping during the heat of
the day
Plants shedding their
leaves to save water
SOFETR
A large area of land covered
with trees and undergrowth
highly complex, constantly
changing environment made up of
a variety of living things (wildlife,
trees, shrubs, wildflowers, ferns,
mosses, lichens, fungi and
microscopic soil organisms) and
non-living things (water,
nutrients, rocks, sunlight and air).
3 Different Forest Structure
1. Tropical rainforest

Temp is high and the air is moist all year
round
Has dense tangle of vegetation that is often
difficult to distinguish the various layers
abundant rainfall makes this a dense, lush
forest. Tropical rainforests are found near
the equator. They are vital storehouses of
biodiversity on the planet, and yet face
severe threat today, with much of their
original extent depleted
Coniferous forests

inhabit the cold, windy
regions around the poles.
There are both hardwoods
and conifers found in this
region.
The conifers are evergreen
and structurally adapted to
withstand the long drought-like
conditions of the long winters,
whereas the hardwoods are
deciduous.
Decidous Forest
Deciduous means "falling off at
maturity"
[
or "tending to fall off",

and
is typically used in reference
to trees or shrubs that lose
their leaves seasonally, and to the
shedding of other plant structures
such as petals after flowering
or fruit when ripe.
In a more general sense, deciduous
means the dropping of a part that is
no longer needed, or falling away
after its purpose is finished. In plants
it is the result of natural processes.
Moors and heaths
Are open treeless areas,
which were originally
covered by forest.
Heaths are found in an
acid soil, they are covered by
plants that usually grows
slowly

TUNDRA
Lies south of the artic
ocean and within the
regions of the polar ice
caps
Temperature is low
throughout the year
The ground remains
frozen and it is called
permafrost
TAIGA
also known as boreal
forest, is
a biome characterized
by coniferous forests
consisting mostly
of pines, spruces and larc
hes.
OCEAN
holds the largest of Earths
biomes. It covers 70% of the
planets surface
Life in the ocean is diverse. The
smallest creatures that call the
ocean home are so tiny that they
can only be seen with a
microscope. The largest creatures
are bluewhales, which can be as
much as 34 meters (110 feet) long.
There are many different ways to
live in the ocean, too.
FRESHWATER
The freshwater biome includes inland bodies
of water called ponds, lakes, wetlands, rivers
and streams
Ponds and lakes are large bodies of
freshwater that are found in all types of
environments and on all continents. Generally
the center of the pond reaches depths of about
10 feet with little emergent vegetation and the
edges are shallow with emergent grasses and
sedges
Rivers and streams are constantly in motion
running from ponds, lakes, or draining
wetlands. Because this environment is in
constant motion fish are very strong and able to
swim up and downstream

SIGNIFICANCE
29
Then God said, I give you every seed-
bearing plant on the face of the whole
earth and every tree that has fruit with
seed in it. They will be yours for food.

And
to all the beasts of the earth and all the
birds in the sky and all the creatures that
move along the groundeverything that
has the breath of life in itI give every
green plant for food. And it was so.
