INSTITUTE OF DESIGN INNOVATION

DESIGN FOR PREFERABLE FUTURES

PROF. IRENE MCARA-MCWILLIAM
DIRECTOR
INSTITUTE OF DESIGN INNOVATION

DESIGN FOR
WORK,
WEALTH AND
WELLBEING

I think it is important to point out that
creativity is a human capability. It is not
owned by, or restricted to artists, designers
and architects; everyone has it, but the real
question is how you harness creativity in
such a way that it can be made productive.

Professor Irene McAra-McWilliam, Director Institute of Design Innovation.
DESIGN INNOVATION
Design Innovation is a way of structuring group creativity towards
valuable outcomes using design practices.

By engaging a wide range of expertise, it is possible to address
complex issues. For example, our researchers work with health and
social care practitioners, doctors and users of health care services to
design healthcare solutions for the future. With organizations, we use
design innovation to support enabling & embedding innovation
capacity. Design Innovation can act as a guide for industry to rethink
an aspect of the business model, to define new products and
services or explore new markets. Through design innovation we view
issues from a variety of angles, considering the economic, socio-
cultural and behavioural factors that play into successful innovation.

We believe that for innovation to be sustainable, it needs to evolve
through direct engagement with the people for whom it is designed.
We are experts in creatively directing an inclusive and iterative
process, working with people to develop and prototype ideas that
lead to robust solutions and valuable outcomes.

INSTITUTE OF DESIGN INNOVATION

Our initial programme of work will
focus on Work, Wealth and Wellbeing,
appreciating that these are not
separate domains but interlinked and
integrated. Underpinning and weaving
through these areas is the drive to
sustainable solutions, building a
legacy of repeatable improved
performance, not one off
interventions.
WORK:
'The Future of Work

- exploring how we can work in
the future

- designing and prototyping
new ways of working enabled
by social networks and
distributed technologies

- creating 'cultures of
innovation' in businesses and
services which enable creative
teams to co-design new
opportunities
WEALTH:
Creating New Value

- creating sustainable
economic growth for our
businesses and services

- exploring new ways of
creating community wealth

- enhancing co-production,
reciprocity, and societal
returns in the context of
innovation

WELLBEING:
'Quality of Life'
- designing people-focussed
health and wellbeing services

- exploring ways in which
people can be supported to
care for themselves and others

- exploring and creating the
conditions for communities to
flourish.
INSTITUTE OF DESIGN INNOVATION

The INDI will exploit its core expertise in
Design Innovation through three forms of
action: Explore, Experience, and Exploit.
The design of these activities and their
staged, interlinked relationship helps
structure the INDI innovation process and
is the foundation for a learning
organisation that builds capability and
expertise in Design Innovation over time to
ensure sustainable impact.
INSTITUTE OF DESIGN INNOVATION

EXPLORE the demand for innovation based on the
needs of policy makers, industry, professionals in the
field, and additionally gathering learning and insight from
international thought leaders, academic research and
forecasts in relevant fields.

EXPERIENCE by building challenge led collaborations
and providing a safe environment to test and rapidly
prototype new approaches and technologies.

EXPLOIT and EMBED these solutions to greater scale
and closer to market enabling partners (business,
communities and government) to realise benefit.
