The chosen shape was torroid.

the centre is 85 feet high yet 20 feet
tapered at ends
Wing shaped terminal made of steel
and reinforced glass

The Sky Gate bridge is the longest double decker truss bridge:3750m long.

ENTRANCE:
Another distinctive design element is the four-story-high "canyon" which greets
visitors as they enter the main terminal building from a connecting concourse.

THE ATRIUM:
The atrium is the center of this structure, and gives the structure the
resemblance of a bird from the out side with giant wings out stretched on both
sides. all four floors of the terminal can be seen from this point .

This innovative design allows the second floor to house forty-one gates at a
distance of one mile , making this terminal the longest building in the world.

AIRSLIDE GLAZING

FIRE CLADING

TRUSSES:
The inverted triangle shaped trusses are referred to as the 'A' truss type, and
this constitutes the 18 trusses of the structure. Each of these is supported by
inclining columns, and on the curbside, by vertical columns. The height
gradually decreases towards the airside, giving it the wing-shell structure .

o Less than half of the site was used.

o The front was left for making a piazza.
o The idea was revolutionary.
o Concrete was used only for 3
underground floors accommodating

parking and sound-proof concert halls.

Featureso Massive structural expressionist.

o Cast exoskeleton.
o Exterior escalator enclosed in transparent tube.
o Functional elements outside the building freeing
internal spaces.

Building Structure
The building was designed on the lines of an "evolving spatial diagram" in
two parts:
1. firstly, a 3-level infrastructure housing the technical facilities and service
areas;
2. secondly, a vast 7-level glass and steel superstructure, including a
terrace and mezzanine floor, concentrating most of the centre's areas of
activity.
o The building's metal framework has 14 porticos with 13 bays, each
spanning 48 m and standing 12.8 m apart. On top of the posts, on each
level, are moulded steel beam hangers ( geberetts), measuring 8 m in
length and weighing 10 tonnes.
o 45 m long girders rest on the beam
hangars, which spread stress through
the posts and are balanced by tiebeams anchored on cross-bars.
o Each storey is 7 m high floor-to-floor.
The glass and steel superstructure
envelops the free open spaces.

o High-tech is an forward looking, optimistic architecture that believes

in progress through industrial technology.
o Invention rather than tradition.
o Ability to control the environment rather than adapting it.
o Temporary arrangement rather than permanent institutions.
