Definition of data warehouse

A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-vari ant
and non-volatile collection of data in support of managements
decision making process (Bill Inmon)

Inmon, W.H.(2005). Building the Data Warehouse , 4th edition

, New York : Wiley

Characteristics of Data Warehouse

Subject Oriented: Data are organized by detailed subject, such
as sales, products or customers . It contains only information
relevant for decision support.
Integrated: It integrates data from different sources into a
consistent format.
Time Variant: A data warehouse maintains historical data . It
enables users to forecast and make comparison among data.
Nonvolatile: Data are non volatile in the data warehouse. Once
they are entered, users can not change the data .

Types of Data Warehouse

Data Marts

Operational Data Stores(ODS)

Enterprise Data Warehouse(EDW)

Data Mart
Data Mart: Data mart is usually smaller and focuses on a particular
subject or department. It is a subset of a data warehouse, typically
consisting of single subject area.
Data marts can be either Dependent or Independent
Department Data Mart is subset that is created directly from data
Warehouse
Independent Data Warehouse is a small warehouse designed for a
strategic business unit or a department

Operational Data Stores (ODS)

It provides recent form of customer information file . It
is used for short time decision making .It consolidates
from multiple source system.

Enterprise Data Warehouses (EDW):

It is a large scale data warehouse that is used across the
enterprise for decision support. It provides integration
of data from many sources into a standard format for
effective business Intelligence and decision support
applications.

Data Warehousing Process

Data source: Data are sourced from multiple independent operational systems
and external sources
Data Extraction: Data are extracted using custom-written or commercial software
called ETL
Data Loading: Data are loaded into a staging area where they are transformed and
cleansed.
Comprehensive database: its provides all relevant summarized and detailed
information from various sources like a EDW
Meta Data: It includes software programs about data and rules for organizing data
so that is can be easy for IT personal to search, especially with web tools
Middleware tools: It enables to access to the DW.

Data Warehouse Development Approach :

Top down development (EDW) approach
This approach does not hinder the creation of data marts . The top
down approach is the ideal approach because it provides a
consistent and comprehensive view of the enterprise .
This approach is supported by Bill Inmon

Data Warehouse Development Approach :

Top Down or EDW approach

Data Warehouse Development Approach :

Bottom up approach or Data Mart approach
This Data Mart approach is subject oriented or department
oriented data warehouse . It is a scaled-down version of a data
warehouse that focuses on the requests of a specific department .
This model applies dimensional data modeling .

Data Warehouse Vendors for Bangladesh

For large companies such as BAT(British American Tobacco) a
or Uniliver they can go for EDW approach and many vendors
such as SAP , ORACEL or IBM they provide DW services for

large multi national companies

And for middle size organization they can go for Data Mart
approach which is less costly than EDW approach .And
companies like Data Mirror . HP , Teradata companies they
prove DW services for middle sized companies

Data Warehouse Vendors for Bangladesh

Bangladesh Bank has taken the initiative to

implement an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). In
this context MicroMac Techno Valley Ltd. Has
developed an application BBDAWAR Tool to simplify
the process of entry and management of data to
generate and submit the CSV files to meet
Bangladesh Bank requirements.

Issues of Implementation of DW
The project must fit with corporate strategy and business objectives
There project must be complete buy-in to the project by executives ,
managers & users
IT is important to managers user expectations about the completed
project
The data warehouse must be built incrementally
The project must be built by both IT and business professionals

Be politically aware

Data Warehuosing ,Vol.07,No-1

Benefits of DW
End users can perform extensive analysis in numerous
ways
A consolidated view of corporate data is possible
Better and more timely information is possible
Enhanced system performance can result
Data access is simple
