History

Oxycodone first came to the U.S. in the

year of 1939. However in 1996, Purdue
Pharma began manufacturing Oxycontin
in the United States as it gradually became
widely used. In 2001 it was the best selling
narcotic pain reliever in the country
despite its ups and downs in the market of
prescription drugs. Since the drug was so
widely available, individuals with extra
pills from a prescription were able to
make a profit by selling it illegally. This is
the marking point of prescription drug
abuse as individuals started to misuse
Oxycontin as a means to get high.

Oxycontin first developed in Germany in

the year of 1916. It was designed to be a
better medication than other opioids,
such as heroin, codeine, and even
morphine.
During this time period, numerous
individuals were either highly addicted to
heroin or experiencing serious side effects
from abuses. The FDA (Food and Drug
Administration) approved oxycodone in
1976.

What is OxyContin?
A prescription drug used as a painkiller for
moderate to severe pain
Exposes patients and other users to the risks of
opioid addiction, abuse and misuse, which can
lead to overdose and death.

Stats

From 2003 to 2008, prescriptions for the drug tripled

there and the number of related deaths increased
every year.

The Canadian Medical Association published a

study in 2009. Deaths increased five times
after OxyContin, the most popular version of
the painkiller, when it was introduced to the
public drug plan in the province of Ontario.

In 2010, for the first time, Canada edged past the

United States to become the highest opioid-consuming
country, per capita, in the world
In 2011, a Canadian Health Policy Institute Report,
estimated that $504 million is the annual cost from
OxyContin abuse. Of that amount, $318 million
represents Ontarios costs alone.

Despite the drugs seriousness, it is one the

most abused prescription drugs available today.

Among new initiates to illicit drug use in

2005, a total of 2.1 million reported
prescription opioids as the first drug they
had tried, more than for marijuana and
almost equal to the number of new
cigarette smokers (2.3 million).

A physician and scientist at Torontos St.

Michaels Hospital, Dr. Irfan Dhalla studied
OxyContin. He states that prescription opioids
cause up to 1,000 deaths in Ontario yearly.

Teenagers and Young Adults

People that have a prescription
They become addicted through
tolerance. The body becomes
used to the medicine for
managing pain so the patient will
take it right away when they start
to feel pain. Some patients even
want an immediate response so
they start to crush the pills to
inject or snort them.

Intervention
Interventions are a confrontation based type of
counselling that is typically consisting of family and
friends as a support group alongside an intervention
specialist who guides the group in addressing
directly or indirectly the addicts issues. The most
common intervention approach is the family/friend
intervention.

Oxycontin appeared on Canadas market

around the year of 2000. Twelve years
later, the province of Ontario has the
highest prescription opioid-related deaths
and opioid addicts than in any other
province in Canada. First Nation Reserves
in Ontario especially in the north have
confronted various crises.

Family/Friend intervention; is orchestrated by

family and friends in which they are the support
group while entering into the recovery phase of the
addict. Seeing as addicts are usually very
manipulative and tend to be liars, a family/friend
intervention helps make them aware of the addicts
devious ways and teach them not to be enablers. In
doing so, the family/friends help to establish
ultimatum boundaries detailing to the addicts that
their behaviour will not longer be tolerated and that
contact will be limited or the relationship terminated
if they do not accept an appropriate treatment
option.

Risk groups

People already suffering from an

addiction of any sort.
Joint pain is a common withdrawn
symptoms of drugs and alcohol
abuse.
These people then turn to
OxyContin, which they become
addicted to after its use.
According to studies it is said that
15% of people that are already
suffering from an addition
problem will become addicted to
OxyContin if taken.

People in these two age groups

would complain that they were
under prescribed medications
after surgerys and would suffer a
lot of pain

prescribed this drug start to abuse
it because they have easy access
to it.
