OF ARTS

Art, as a term is taken from the Italian


word, artis, which means
craftsmanship, skill, mastery of form,
inventiveness and the association that
exist between form and ideas between
material and techniques.

Art is derived from the Latin word ars, meaning ability or

Art is a production of mans need to express himself. F.

Art is concerned itself with the communications of certain
ideas and feelings by means or sensuous medium, color,
sound, bronze, marble, words, and film. C. Sanchez
Art brings life in harmony with the beauty of life
Art is an attitude or a state of mind for its own satisfaction
and fulfillment.

According to Webster:
Art is human ingenuity in adapting natural things to mans use which

means that an artist uses his intelligence in transforming God-made


creations into man-made things that satisfy his needs.
Four common essentials of art are identified:
Art must be man-made
Art must be creative and not imitative
Art must benefit and satisfy man-such that he can make use of art
in practical life through artistic principles, taste and skills.
Art is expressed through a certain medium or materials by which
the artist communicates to his fellows

1. Personal or Individual Functions


- artist have their personal reason for
indulging in Art.
2. Social Functions
- man is a social being as such he associates
with his fellow beings
3. Economic Functions
- many people believe that it does not pay to
be an artist
4. Political Functions
- politicians promoting their programs and
political agenda by means of art.

5. Historical/cultural
- paintings, sculpture, architectural work, drama, play, etc.
and other art forms serve to record historical figures and
events that embodied the nations culture and heritage.
6. Religious Functions
- almost all art forms evolved from religion
7. Physical Functions
- Art fulfills and satisfy mans needs, the most import is the
aesthetic feeling one experience having completed a work of
art.

8. Aesthetic Functions
-Thru art man become conscious and anxious
of the beauty of nature learn to use it, love and
preserve them for his enjoyment and
appreciation.
9. Utilitarian Functions
- with the creation of the various forms of art,
man now lives in comfort and happiness

Importance of Arts
1. Through art we can communicate and express our feelings in
order to heighten and lighten the importance of certain events to
keep them memorable and pleasurable.
2.To remind us of the heroic deeds of great men like the
monuments, statues sculptures, murals etc.
3. We learn to value and appreciate beautiful things as a
consequence of our encounter with the Art.
4. Art enriches mans life by improving and developing the nature
through landscaping, gardening, propagation and conservation
of natural resources.

Purpose of Art
1. Artworks are a valuable source of inspiration and
give us a delightful experiences.
2. Through the artists work, we get a glimpse of the
past their , feelings ,thought and beliefs of the
people in their time.
3. Art transforms man into a highly-cultured
dignified and respectable human beings.

Scope of Art
Visual Art- these are forms perceived by the
eyes and occupy space.
Classifications
a)Graphic arts or a two dimensional these
visual arts have length and width they are
describe as a flat art because they are
seen on flat surface
ex. paintings, drawings, sketching etc.

visual arts have length, width and volume
ex. sculpture, architecture, interior,
costume designing ,set, and theater

Other scopes of Arts :

According to media and forms,arts include plastic


arts,phoenic arts,kinetic arts,pure arts,and mixed arts.
Practical or useful arts are directed to produce artifacts
and utensils for the satisfaction of human
needs.Handicrafts(basket weaving,mat
weaving,etc.).Embroidery,ceramics,iron,and metal
crafts,tin can manufacturing, etc.. Are examples of these
arts.

Liberal Arts are directed toward intellectual growth, such as


in the study of
Philosophy,psychology,literature,mathematics,and
sciences.
Fine Arts are focused towards creative activity for the
contemplation of the mind, and the uplift of the
spirit.Painting,sculpture,architecture are examples of these
arts.
Major Arts are characterized by actual and potential
expressiveness such as music,poetry,sculpture.
Minor Arts are concerned on practical uses and
purposes,such as interior decoration and porcelain art.

Plastic Arts are developed through space and perceived by


the sense of sight.Such arts include sculpture and
decorative materials.
Kinetic Arts involve the element rhythm.Dance is a type of
this art.
Phonetic Arts are developed toward sounds and words as
media of expression.Examples are music,drama and
literature.
Pure Arts take only one medium of expression like sound in
music and color in painting.
Mixed Arts take more than one medium such as the opera
which combines music,poetry and drama.

1. Objective arts or representational- an

art work that depict something easily


recognized by most people.

2. Non-representational or non-objective
arts- art work that have no
resemblance to any real subject.

Origin of Art
Primitive time when superstition and beliefs in spirit
are still very common in every culture. It is tribal and
indigenous that every ritual and ceremony is
accompanied by dancing, paintings, music and poetry.
Primitive art is symbolic.
In short

- Art is a reflection of creative and ingenuity and


involuntariness within a culture.

Arts may beautify our humanity.


They Bring out the good and noble to us. Man created it or made
it, appreciate it, used it or applied to change or transformed man
into a cultured , dignified creature.
Art Appreciation- is the ability to interpret or understand manmade arts and enjoy them either through actual and work
experience.
Therefore, art appreciation deals with learning, understanding
and creating them in order to enjoy them.

Napolen Isabelo Veloso Abueva - (born
January 26, 1930), more popularly known
as Napolen Abueva, is a Filipino artist. He
is a sculptor given the distinction as the
Philippines' National Artist for Sculpture. He
is also entitled as the "Father of Modern
Philippine Sculpture". He is the
onlyBoholano given the distinction
as National Artist of the Philippines in the
field of Visual Arts

Rey Paz Contreras - was born
August 31, 1950. He is an
outstanding Filipino sculptor
working with urban refuse and
ecological materials as artistic
media. He is encouraged by the
native Filipino traditions and
creates visual forms of current

Filipino aesthetics. Contreras'
pioneered the exercise of travieza
or hardwood railroad tracks
through the late 70s.

Pelagia Mendoza - was our first


famous woman sculptor. As a sculptor,
she made statues of people and figures
of animals and other subjects out of
clay, stone, and marbles. Together
with her husband, Crispulo Zamora,
she also started a business of medalmaking. The business still exists today.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti
Simoni - (6 March 1475 18 February 1564),
commonly known as Michelangelo, was
an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter,
architect, poet, and engineer who exerted an
unparalleled influence on the development
of Western art. Despite making few forays
beyond the arts, his versatility in the
disciplines he took up was of such a high
order that he is often considered a contender
for the title of the archetypal Renaissance
man, along with fellow Italian Leonardo da
Vinci.

Franois-Auguste-Ren Rodin (12


November 1840 17 November 1917),
known as Auguste Rodin,was a
French sculptor. Although Rodin is
generally considered the progenitor of
modern sculpture, he did not set out to
rebel against the past. He was schooled
traditionally, took a craftsman-like
approach to his work, and desired
academic recognition,although he was
never accepted into Paris's foremost
school of art.

Edvard Eriksen (10 March 1876 - 12 January


1959) was a Danish-Icelandic sculptor. He is
best known as the creator of the Little
Mermaid statue in Copenhagen 1909-1913.
He apprenticed as a wood carver, after which
he trained at the Royal Academy 1894-99.
Among his other works are allegorical statues
of Christian 9th and Queen Louise's sarcophagi
in Roskilde Cathedral (191018). Edvard Eriksen
taught at the Royal Academy between 190819
and was a conservator at Thorvaldsen
Museum 1930-53.

Fernando Amorsolo y
Cueto (May 30, 1892 April 24,
1972) is one of the most
important artists in the history
of painting in the Philippines.
Amorsolo was a portraitist and
painter of rural Philippine
landscapes. He is popularly
known for his craftsmanship
and mastery in the use of light.
Born in Paco, Manila, he earned
a degree from the Liceo de
Manila Art School in 1909.

Michelangelo di Lodovico

Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430 26 November
1516) was an Italian Renaissance painter,
probably the best known of the Bellini family
of Venetian painters. His father was Jacopo
Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini, and his
brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna. He is
considered to have revolutionized Venetian
painting, moving it towards a more sensuous
and colouristic style. Through the use of clear,
slow-drying oil paints, Giovanni created deep,
rich tints and detailed shadings. His
sumptuous coloring and fluent, atmospheric
landscapes had a great effect on the Venetian
painting school, especially on his
pupils Giorgione and Titian.

Charles-Franois Daubigny (15 February 1817 19 February 1878)
was one of the painters of the Barbizon school, and is considered
an important precursor of Impressionism.
Daubigny was born in Paris, into a family of painters and was
taught the art by his father Edmond Franois Daubigny and his
uncle, miniaturist Pierre Daubigny.
