BOILER ROOM

As a precaution against funnel against

funnel fires and sparks, burners, tubes,
uptakes, exhaust manifolds and sparks
arresters should be maintained in good
working condition. If there is a funnel fire or
sparks are emitted from the funnel, the
tanker should, if necessary, alter the course
as soon as possible to avoid sparks falling
and must be stopped and all openings
closed

BLOWING THE BOILER TUBES

Boiler tubes should not be soot prior to
arrival and after department from a port. The
officer on bridge watch should be consulted
prior to the operation commencing and the
vessels course altered if necessary. Boiler
tubes should not be blown when the vessel
in port.

EMERGENCY AND ABNORMAL

RUNNING CONDITION
The following are the guidelines for an engineer on
duty to respond to emergency
HIGH WATER LEVEL:
a. check and reduce firing rate.
b. Operate blow down system
c. throttle feed check valves.
d. If bad water hammer due to carry-over is
experienced, close steam outlet valve to prevent
damage to pipeline and machinery.

Water level below gauge glass:

a. shut-off burner (if not cut-out
automatically)
b. take the boiler out of load.
c. ensure the internal damage due to
overheating.
d. Do not bring-up the water level in haste
until the boiler parts are cooled down.

LARGE LEAK:
1. Water level vanishes
2. Bursting noise
3. Drop in steam pressure
4. Flame may be put off by steam.

EMERGENCY OPERATION DUE

TO FIRE
Fire can occur in the air heaters,
economizers, superheaters and exhaust
gas heat exchangers. These heat
extracting units are all situated in the path of
combustion gases and under certain
conditions, fortunately rare, can experience
disastrous fires. These fires are two type

TWO TYPES OF BOILER FIRE:

1.SOOT FIRE
2. HYDROGEN FIRE

ADVANTAGES and
DISADVANTAGES OF Fire Tube
Boiler
ADVANTAGES OF FIRE TUBE BOILER
1.can use impure water, without serious
damage.
2. They can contain a large amount of water,
and do not require exacting supervision as
regard to water level. Steam pressure is
steadier.
3.Their first cost is relatively low

4. They are accessible to maintenance.

5. Because fire is on the inside of Boiler
and is surrounded by water and radiation
losses are lower.

DISADVANTAGES OF FIRE TUBE BOILER

1. Because they contain large amount of
water, they require a long interval of time to
raise a steam and are not flexible as
regards to changes of steam demand.
2. They are more susceptible to explosion
and in such a case, the large volume of
escaping water flashing into steam uopon
reaching the atmosphere might cause
serious damage to personnel.

3. High steam pressure would require

extremely thick Boiler plate, and thus the fire
tube Boiler are not usually capable of
producing steam at high pressure and
temperature.
4. Typically efficiency is less than that of
water tube Boiler.
