FLAME - EYE

OUTLINE

This equipment detects the lumen sity of

flame, and converts the existence of
flame into electric signal. The flame eye
detecting the existence of flame,
transmits its signal to the flame detector
relay. Then this relay signal is connected
to the combustion indicating circuit or the
fuel oil shut off circuit of the burner
control circuit.

OPERATION

a) flame eye
The flame eye is fitted to the peep hole
of air register or the front plate of boiler and it converts
the burner flame condition in to electric signal.
Describing more precisely the light of the flame reaches
to the photoconductive cell, cds.
The cds means cadomiumsulfide and
it is a kind of semiconductor. It has such property that
the electric resistance decreases according to the
increase of the intensity of light . the signal of light is
converted to the electric signal utilizing this property. The
cds used in this flame eye shows the electric resistance
of about 10 k ohm or 500 k ohm for the intensity of light
of 10 or 1000 lux respectively

b) flame detector relay

This relay amplifies the electric
signal which is transmitted from the flame eye by means
of the silicon type transistor causes the miniature relay to
act and the signal drawn out to the other part as an
electric contact point signal. When the flame eye does
not detect the flame the electric resistance of the flame
eye shows more than 500 k ohm and the relay does not
operate. Contrarily when the flame eye catches the
flame the resistance decreases to less than 100 k ohm
and therefore the collector current of the transistor is
increased resulting the working of the last relay. Since
this detector relay is of the plug in type it can be easily
inspected or exchanged.

REGULATION

There is sensitivity regulation for the flame detector relay, as a

regulation part. Sometimes it is difficult to catch the flame according
to the different to place of the flame eye fitting and contrarily it may
happen to catch the flame from another burner. In such a case the
flame detector relay should be regulated in the following procedure.
By means of the rotation of the sensitivity regulation screw which is
placed on the upper face of the flame detector relay, the sensitivity
is decreased and unless the intensity of light is high, the relay
cannot operate. Contrarily when it is revolved clockwise the
sensitivity is increased and therefore even though the intensity of
light is low the relay can be operated. At this time it should be paid
attention that too high sensitivity results in impossibility for catching
accidental extinguishment. Thus as a procedure for regulation
during combustion of burner first the sensitivity regulation screw is
to be revolved to the utmost. Secondly revolving the regulation
screw slowly clockwise, the position where the relay can work
should be found. Thirdly the regulation screw should be set at the
position where it is revolved further about 10 degree clockwise from
this position. This is the best position of best sensitivity.

INSPECTION
The flame eye should be occasionally
inspected because if some carbon or dust
adheres to the front, the flame can not be
cached. But when the sealing air is normal
it will almost be kept clean.

How to check flame detector relay

If this detector relay does not not work it should

be checked as follows :

First it is to be confirmed whether the sensitivity

regulation screw is in position of lowest sensitivity or
not. Secondly the flame eye connecting terminals
should be put in short circuit by lead wire. At this time
if the relay can be operated, it may be considered that
it is in normal condition; but if not fuse etc should be
checked.

How to check flame eye

When the flame detector is normal the flame eye and the
lead wire should be checked. In this case, first the flame
detector relay is to be drawn out from its socket and
then the ohm meter calibrated 0-100 ohm of the tester
should be connected between the socket pin no. 3 and
no. 4. secondly the indicated value of the tester should
be checked the flame eye being lighted. In this case the
tester shows the value less than 5 40 k ohm , if the
flame eye is normal. When the flame eye is not lighted
the value more than 500 kilohm is showed. If these
values are not showed cds should be exchanged .
incorrectness of cds depends principally upon the
temperature. In the case of incorrect cds therefore it
should be checked whether the sealing air is in the
condition of regular values.
