Problem

Lots of data

Many categories

Many sub-categories

No effective visual tool to interact and analyse the data

Data

UALR Student Enrolment from Fall 2000 to Spring 2014.

UALR Student Enrolment by Ethnicity.

UALR Student Enrolment by Sex.

Contains only Fall and Spring Enrolments at UALR

Target User community

Help Data analyst and Research assistants at the Office of

Institutional Research

Concepts

Visual Structures:

Spatial Substrate: There are 2 planes.

X-axis represents Spring(Jan) and Fall(Aug) Semesters
y-axis represents the student enrollments

Marks: Points connected to make area

Mark Properties: Color and size of area

Concepts ..contd
Tuftes principles

Avoid chartjunk

Use multifunctioning graphical elements: NA

Use small multiples: NA

Maximize data-ink ratio

Mouse Hovering reduces the data-ink ratio as you sees one specific

Pre-attentive processing: Yes, Colors, peaks and valleys

Color Purpose:

For Grouping students on ethnicity

A line graph would have increased more data ink

Ratio but would not show correlation in a better way as stacked

area graph.

Interactivity

Mouse hover display

Attribute selection

Focus with date range

Individual Graph and aggregate stacked graph

Comparison with Tableau

Link to Tableau (U:naxxxbill123@gmail.com, P:Nxxxxx3!)

Individual charts were not easy to show on tableau

Challenges

Obtaining data from various web pages

Customizing to specific needs hence coding

Organization of different graphs- every type of graph should have

a purpose.

Organization of various web pages

Why Area Charts?

Memorizable

Faster Pre-attentive processing

Effective use of color

Continuous flow

Very suited for categorical data

Better for understanding

Variations

See pattern overtime

Relations

Comparison

Why Stream Charts?

Memorizable

Faster Pre-attentive processing

Continuous flow

Good for making reports interesting.

Why Stacked Area % Charts?

Memorizable

Faster Pre-attentive processing

Continuous flow

Better for understanding

Variations

See pattern overtime

Relations

Comparison

Faults with Bar and Line Charts

Tedious to memorize

Line charts tend to get intersected, which distorts* the view

Bar Charts make the graph have many visual elements which
could give less

*These conclusions are for this specific data

Features of the project

650+ Combinations of graphs

Same data is Converted into various different graphs and charts

Satisfies most of the interactivity needs of the target user

Very responsive

Decent and professional looking graphs.

Successfully accomplished the users needs using Tuftes

principles.

Has a great potential in improvement.

No software installation required

DEMO

Responses after by OIR

my eyes to consumed it all

was easy to maneuver and operate within just a few seconds of

using it

area chart was truly best suited to illustrate this specific data

would recommend to higher authorities to implement this

project

internal and external would benefit from seeing the data

I could easily drill down to more details

Future and Improvements

Implementation of Focus Feature in the area charts

Categorize and visualize data Semester-wise
