BIOGRAPHY
He is an architect whose 'designs for the future' are
inspired by the brilliance of the timeless, vernacular
architecture of the past. Having started his journey with
small interior projects, that nevertheless had the Dulal
Mukherjee hallmark, he moved on to architectural projects
of varied dimensions, including landscape and urban
design.

BIOGRAPHY
An architect who self-confessedly designs from the
heart, he has given a new dimension to all his works.
Greatly inspired by the vastness and unconquerable
majesty of nature, his designs have always striven to be
embellishments in the wide canvas of the Earth's natural
beauty. The multi-hued range of his designs include
housing, office & commercial complexes, institutions,
interior work, resorts and restoration & reuse projects .

How difficult is it now to stick to

your architectural philosophy?
In the face of rising land cost,
the demand is for maximum
utilisation of space, but I try to
create my buildings in harmony with
nature. I try to create my designed
spaces around the existing flora as
that acts as an extension of
nature. Natural contours are
respected to preserve the quality
of the top soil and in the absence
of existing flora, greenery is
created both through ground level
and terrace level landscaping.

How difficult is it now to stick to

your architectural philosophy?
There is no end to learning
and no shortcut to success.
The remarkable creation of
our forefathers may be
adopted with individual
interpretations and local
flavours but blindfold
copying is neither exemplary
nor inspirational for the
future generation.

A 40+ year old organization, Dulal Mukherjee and
Associates, is a 50+ strong firm comprising a team of
highly qualified architects and other professionals, being
one of the major architectural firms of the country.
From interiors to corporate offices, bungalow,
Government and institutional projects, high-rise
residential-cum-commercial complexes and restoration
and adaptive reuse projects, the firm has played a very
significant role in shaping the metamorphosing
architectural face of Kolkata.

The 'Metropolitan Building', a Heritage
Building and landmark of Esplanade Square.
"It was where British army officers stationed
in Singapore on short furlough would shop
for a decent lifestyle
At present, it is owned by the LIC & houses
many offices & stores such as Big Bazaar &
The Cottage Industry Showroom. Efforts are
being made to restore it under the
supervision of architect Dulal Mukherjee.
