URBAN SPORTS COMPLEX PURSUES -

SPORT IS INSPIRED BY HUMAN URGE TO MOVE

AXIS is a main line of direction, motion, growth, or extension
Axis creates focus and no confusion for human movement.

AND ITS STRATEGY IS

DESIGN EVOLUTION

Each person will move in

their line of sight

As a design element AXIS line serves as the organizing

principle to which elements in the composition are referred.
The axis itself is invisible, but the perception it creates is of
a well organized design.

PLANNING -

Planning done on the principle of AXIS.

Segregation of spaces as per requirement (like
Built-up unit, Indoor activities, Outdoor Activities, etc)
Site orientation is aligned as N-S direction. Since
best suitable direction alignment for sports.
Built form is evolved from modern tensile
structures. Since large spans are involved, steel
structure is preferred.
Stage of open air theater is towards north, as
performer should not face sun glare at any duration of
daytime.
Use of flags at a ht of 1.2m serving aesthetical
purpose and showing wind direction which would help
players to play better.

ROOFING Roofing of sports zone is designed as per

comfortable human eye perception for over all view.
Sloping roof also act as sun barrier and protects
from high wind pressure and rain water.

DIAGRAM SHOWING CIRCULATION PATTERN

The pattern is very simple and easy to understand.
The main axIs have been marked on the given
diagram.
Many pathways follow the periphery of the built
blocks so navigation is easy.
The pattern is such that each built block is easily
accessible from any given direction.
There are different circulation patterns for the
visitors and the staff and sportspersons, so chaos
is avoided.

Line of axis gives sense of

vision and human eye is
perfect axis former.
Roofing form of multipurpose arena is evolved
from human eye.
Since, multi-purpose
arena caters all sport
activities thereby, its roof
profile is kept dominant.

CHOICE OF MATERIAL
Other than the need to be eco-friendly, geographic location, climatic
conditions, logistics and economics play a vital role in the choice of
materials, local materials, especially traditional ones, are still in
demand and newer, better materials are being ignored owing to poor
marketing efforts.
The weight factor, lack of skilled labour, increasing cost of labour,
poor availability and time factor, apart from environmental concerns,
are making traditional materials give way to modern ones.
traditional and modern designs can harmoniously coexist in todays
scenario.
The tiles are fixed to wooden or mild steel battens with steel screws
that prevent them from being blown off in high winds.
Energy conservation
Forte includes corrosion protection coatings, scientific waterproofing
and fire protection products and devices.
The new materials also make the structure more durable and require
far less maintenance.
Also, Indore has a large developed industrial area, making these
materials easily available.

Tensile structures are easy to construct and are costeffective.
They are light weight and give a surreal feeling to the entire

GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONSSTAIRWAY

NEW CONSTRUCTION ZONAL PLANNING:

A stairway is that part of a structure which is not a radial gangway but which
comprises of at least one flight of steps, including the landings at the head and foot
of stairways and any landings in between flights.
Flights of stairways: Individual flights should consist of no more than 12 risers.
However, where the stairway is a secondary stairway for escape only, this may be
increased to 16 risers.
Dimensions of stairways:
Recommended minimum width: 1.2m
Maximum width: 1.8m
Minimum height: 150mm
Maximum height: 170mm or 180mm
Handrails: handrails should be a minimum height of 900mm, and a maximum
height of 1.0m.
RAMPS
The maximum gradient should not exceed
1 in 20 for a going of up to 10m;
1 in 15 for a going up to 5m; and
1 in 12 for a going not exceeding 2m.

LIGHTING:

Circulation routes (including stairways and gangways) should

be a recommended minimum of 1.2m wide.
ZONE ONE: the pitch or area of activity. This may be considered a place of reasonable
safety,
to which spectators can be evacuated before using other emergency exits
ZONE TWO: spectator viewing accommodation.
ZONE THREE: internal concourses and hospitality areas.
ZONE FOUR: the outer circulation area. Zone Four can serve as a vital access area for
emergency and service vehicles, without disrupting circulation in Zone Two.
ZONE FIVE: a buffer zone outside the sports ground perimeter, used for the public to gather
before entry and for links to car parks and public transport.

Continuous crush barrier

configuration
The recommended height for crush barriers is 1.1 m and is measured
from the surface of the step to the top of the rail.
For existing situations, measurement can be taken from the step to
the center of the rail, and be between 1.02 m and 1.12 m.

The minimum seating row depth should be 800 mm and

width should be 460 mm for new construction.
The minimum seating row depth should be 610 mm and
width should be 460 mm for old construction.
Minimum clearway should be 400 mm.
This can be reduced to 305 mm where there are not more
than seven seats in a row served by a gangway on one
side, or not more than 14 seats in a row served by a
gangway on both sides.
