discussions under shady trees before architects B V
Doshi, Christopher Benninger and economist Y K Alagh
conceptualized the school of planning at CEPT
university.
The CEPT has four schools functioning under it, viz :
School of Planning
School of Architecture

CONSTRUCTED OF EXPOSED BRICK AND RCC.
THE EXPOSED BRICK WORK GIVES AN EERIE
LOOK TO THE STRUCTURE.
THEY ALSO INCREASE THE THERMAL
PERFORMANCE OF THE BUILDING.

FEATURES
SKYLIGHTS:
One can see an interesting use of skylights in the
structure.
Maximum skylights are provided on the north
faade of the building
There are open to sky(OTS) corridors provided in
the campus.
Provision of flexible spaces which can be used in
multifunctional manner.
Strong connectivity between spaces making it an
open space with no doors

The plan follows the site boundary with a setback of 6m maintaining its character.
Academic clusters have been grouped together to form units comprising class rooms, labs, common lobby, and service spaces.
The planning revolves around the two courts- the sunken cover with a stepped kund and the amphitheatre

stepped kund

Amphitheatre.

24

ORIENTATION

NW and SE axis, facilitating good
exposure to the sun and breeze, at times
causing glare.
Different blocks of building complex are
placed according to the site lines. All the
peripheral building lines are parallel to the
site lines.

PEARL ACADEMY,JAIPUR

The Jaipur campus has an excellent infrastructure to

facilitate design learning and education.
the foundation stone of this campus on 29th January
2007, during her tenure as the Governor of Rajasthan.
The Jaipur Campus boasts state-of-the-art Jewellery &
Gemology Labs. It is fully equipped with learning
equipment and spaces required by an international
design college and boasts of alumni who are amongst
the whos who of design professionals today.
The Jaipur Campus hosted the 14th International
Conference of the International Foundation for Fashion
Technology Institutes in 2012. Spread over 3.28 acres,
the state-of-the-art Jaipur Campus provides its
students with advanced teaching facilities, making it
the ideal place to learn the nuances of fashion and
design. The campus also won the Best Learning
Building award at the World Architecture Festival
Awards, 2009.

COURSES

The study programme of the cources offer :

School of fashion styling and textiles

School of design

School of communication,media and Films

School of creative business

The building is protected from the environment

by a double skin which is derived from a
traditional building element called the Jaali
which is prevalent in Rajasthani architecture.
The double skin acts as a thermal buffer between
the building and the surroundings. The density of
the perforated outer skin has been derived using
computational shadow analysis based on
orientation of the faades. The outer skin sits 4
feet away from the building and reduces the
direct heat gain through fenestrations. Drip
channels running along the inner face of the
Jaali allow for passive downdraft evaporative
cooling, thus reducing the incident wind
temperature.

CLIMATE INFULENCED DESIGN

PLAN

COURTYARDS

The scheme relies on self shading sliver courts to

control the temperatures of internal spaces and open
stepped wells while allowing for sufficient day lighting
inside studios and class rooms. The entire building is
raised above the ground and a scooped out under belly
forms a natural thermal sink which is cooled by water
bodies through evaporative cooling. This under belly
which is thermally banked on all sides serves as a
large student recreation and exhibition zone and
forms the anchor for the entire project. During the
night when the desert temperature drops this floor
slowly dissipates the heat to the surroundings keeping
the area thermally comfortable. This time lag suits
the staggered functioning of the institute.

MATERIAL USED

The materials used for construction are a mix of

local stone, steel, glass, and concrete chosen
keeping in mind the climatic needs of the region
while retaining the progressive design intent.
Energy efficiency is a prime concern and the
institute is 100% self sufficient in terms of
captive power and water supply and promotes
rain water harvesting and waste water re-cycling
through the use of a sewage treatment plant

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

. Besides having become a very successful model

for cost effective passive architecture in desert
regions the design and facilities of the campus
complement the ideology of the Pearl Academy of
Fashion a cutting edge design institute with a
sustainable approach. The Pearl Academy of
Fashion is an exemplar of an inclusive
architecture which intends to accommodate all
the heritage values while positioning it within
the contemporary cultural and architectural
paradigm.
