FELIXSTOWE PORT
The Port of Felixstowe has been at the forefront of the
container industry for over 40 years and the opening of Berths
8&9 in 2011 and its further development will secure the
position long into the future.
Berths 8&9 is the only port in the UK to
have handled the 18,000 TEU vessel, The
Majestic Maersk, one of the worlds latest
Mega Vessels. The largest container ships
currently on order have a capacity of 19,000
TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), and
are longer and wider than anything that has
gone before. Failure to provide facilities for
these class of vessels would mean that the
worlds most efficient ships could not call in
the UK, driving up the cost of imports and
making UK exports less competitive.

FELIXSTOWE PORT PREPARED FOR THE

FUTURE

In Phase 1 of the development,

Berths 8&9 have already been
equipped with the largest shipto-shore cranes of their type
anywhere in the world. With an
outreach of 62 metres, they
are capable of handling
container ships with 24
containers wide on deck. Each
crane weighs approximately
2,000 tonnes and is able to lift
two containers simultaneously,
up to a total of 70 tonnes.

The terminal is also equipped

with 22 rubber-tyred gantry
cranes (RTGs). Designed to the
latest standards, these eco
RTGs have significantly lower
emission levels and use up to
40% less fuel than standard
machines, helping to make
Berths 8&9 the lowest-carbon
container terminal in the UK.

The container storage

yard for the new facility
has also been enlarged
by the reclamation of 28
hectares of riverbed and,
in Phase 1, has a
capacity of 24,000 TEU.

SIMULTANEOUS HANDLING OF MEGA VESSELS

When complete, Berths

8&9 will provide 1,285
metres of quay, and with
a
depth
of
water
alongside of 18 metres
below chart datum, it is
designed to allow the
docking and processing
of multiple Mega Vessels
simultaneously. The first
phase, opened in 2011,
consists of 730 metres of
quay, initially dredged to
16
metres
depth

The economys ability
to secure future
growth will only be
possible if the UK has
the necessary
infrastructure. Berths

country has the right
port capacity to enable
this growth.

RO-RO OPERATIONS
DOOLEY TERMINAL
Ro-Ro cargo operations continue to
form an integral part of the daily
activities at the Port of Felixstowe.

These activities are centred on Dooley Terminals berths 3 & 4, which provide
common-user Ro-Ro capacity with lock-free access, rapid mooring/un-mooring,
700 trailer parking slots, and secure ISPS-compliant terminal facilities including
a high specification surfacing and security fencing, and sophisticated camera
systems for the recording of cargo condition through the gatehouse complex.
