BUILDINGS SURVIVING

EARTHQUAKE

SHILPA KHARWAL

49-story office building.

California earthquake in 1989.
Magnitude of this earthquake was
7.1 on Richter scale.

No one was seriously injured and
the Transamerica Pyramid was not
damaged.
.

This famous San Francisco landmark had been designed to

withstand even greater earthquake stresses, and that design
worked as planned during the earthquake
Pyramid shaped structures promise a better stability against
earthquakes and winds.
The elevation configuration can prevent buildings resonant
amplifications due to the fact that a properly configured
building disperses the shear wave energy between a wide range
of frequencies.

TAIPEI 101, TAIWAN

Second tallest building in the world.
Taipei 101 is designed to withstand
the typhoon winds and earthquake
tremors common in its area of the
Asia-Pacific
The design achieves both strength and
flexibility for the tower through the use
of
high-performance
steel
construction.
The stability of the design became
evident during construction when, on
March 31, 2002, a 6.8-magnitude
earthquake rocked Taipei. The tremor
was strong enough to topple two
construction cranes from the 56th
floor, then the highest. Five people died
in the accident, but an inspection
showed no structural damage to the
building,
and
construction
soon
resumed

Thirty-six columns support Taipei 101,including eight "megacolumns" packed with 10,000-psi concrete.[
Every eight floors, trusses connect the columns in the
building's core to those on the exterior.
These features combine with the solidity of its foundation to
make Taipei 101 one of the most stable buildings ever
constructed.
The foundation is reinforced by 380 piles driven 80m (262ft)
into the ground, extending as far as 30m (98ft) into the
bedrock.
Each pile is 1.5m (5ft) in dia.
Apart from these three tuned mass dampers have been put in
the building of which one is major suspended from the 92 nd to
the 88th floor.

Masonry is traditionally defined as
hand-placed units of natural or
manufactured material, laid with
mortar.

BHUJ EARTHQUAKE, INDIA

Buildings effected by earthquake in
Bhuj in 2001
Measured 7.9 on Richter scale.
interesting observation is
buildings
with
balconies
dramatically
better
than
without.

that
did
ones

The only plausible explanation for

this is that the floor joists, which
extended
through
the
rubble
stonewalls to support the balconies,
were more successful at stabilizing
the walls than were joists terminating
in pockets.
