SYNOPSIS OF THE COURSE


The course, designed for students with MUET
Band 4, 5 or 6, aims at enhancing the skills
necessary to function effectively in academic
settings. The main focus is to develop
students critical interaction with texts
through discussions and presentations on
current and global issues, and critique
writing. The course adopts immersive and
self-directed learning approaches.

COURSE LEARNING
OUTCOMES
Students should be able to:
critically analyse texts from various sources
write critiques on texts effectively
produce a poster on current social issues
present a poster on current social issues.

Description:
The Project component requires students to form groups
of 5. Each group is required to investigate an issue or
problem faced by the community.
Learning Outcomes:
Students should be able to:
Conduct a library research on a current issue
Read and select appropriate texts related to the issue
Read, summarize and synthesize information in texts

related to the issue


Produce and present a poster on a selected issue

Description:
Critique Circle is a text critique activity which
focuses on developing students critical
reading and text critique skills.
After selecting a text they have chosen for the
Critique, they upload the text using any online
platforms (blog, Facebook, Padlet or others).
The groups embark on an online discussion in
which they first, write a critique on the text
and later, respond to critiques written by other
group members.

Students should be able to:
Critically analyze information given in a text
Write a critique on a text
Respond to peer critique

Description
This component is a critique test that will be
conducted in the classroom. The aim of this quiz
is to gauge students individual ability to write a
critique on a given text.
