NetLinx

What Networks are Driving Your Plant?

NetLinx Open Network Architecture uses open networking
technology for seamless, top-floor to shop-floor integration.
The networks in the NetLinx architecture DeviceNet,
ControlNet, and EtherNet/IP speak a common
language called the Common Industrial Protocol(CIP) and
share a universal set of communication services.
NetLinx architecture, part of the Integrated Architecture,
seamlessly integrates all the components in an automation
system from the simplest device to the Internet helping you
to improve flexibility, reduce installation costs, and increase
productivity.
NetLinx Open Network Architecture enables you to
simultaneously control, configure, and collect information at
any point.

DH-485 Industrial Local Area Network Overview

DH-485 is a local area network (LAN) designed for factory-floor
applications. DH-485 allows for connection up to 32 devices, including
SLC 500 and MicroLogix 1000 controllers, color graphics systems, and
personal computers. The DH-485 link together with auxiliary RS-232-C
(DF1 protocol) links make up the DH-485 network.
With RSLinx software installed on a PC, communication with other
nodes on the network is possible.
Using SLC 500 Programming Software, program SLC 500 controllers
over the DH-485 network. This means that a single PC connected to
the network can be used to program all the SLC 500 controllers on the
network.

DeviceNet
Providing Users with the Ability to Distribute and
Troubleshoot Simple Devices Throughout Their
Architectures
DeviceNet network is an open device level
network that provides connections between
simple industrial devices (such as sensors and
actuators) and higher-level devices (such as
programmable controllers and computers).
Uses the proven Common Industrial Protocol
(CIP) to provide the control, configure, and data
collection capabilities for industrial devices.
DeviceNet is a flexible network that works with
devices from multiple vendors offering a wide
variety of both Rockwell Automation and third
party vendor products.

DeviceNet features
Cost-effective networking solution to simple devices
Easily access data in intelligent sensors/actuators from
multiple third party vendors
Provides master/slave, Change-of-State, and peer-topeer capabilities
Producer/Consumer services let you configure devices,
control, and collect information over a single network
Improves system integration for both safety and standard
applications
Reduces downtime with early detection of system
performance problems
Reduces maintenance costs with diagnostics and
automatic device replacement

Common Industrial Protocol (CIP)

Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) is a major component
within the NetLinx Open Network Architecture, and it
provides you with four common features:
common control services provides you with a standard
set of messaging services for all three networks within the
NetLinx architecture
common communication services lets you connect to
any network and configure and collect data from any
network
common routing capabilities saves time and effort during
system configuration because no routing tables or added
logic are necessary to move data between networks
common base knowledge reduces the amount of training
needed when moving to different networks within the
NetLinx architecture by providing similar configuration tools
and features

ControlNet

Providing Users with a Robust, Deterministic, and Secure I/O

Network for Their Most Challenging Applications
The ControlNet network is an open, state-of-the-art control network
that meets the demands of real-time, high-throughput applications.
The ControlNet network uses the proven Common Industrial
Protocol (CIP) to combine the functionality of an I/O network and a
peer-to-peer network providing high-speed performance for both
functions.
The ControlNet network gives you deterministic, repeatable
transfers of all mission-critical control data in addition to supporting
transfers of non-time-critical data. I/O updates and controller-tocontroller interlocking always take precedence over program
uploads and downloads and messaging.

ControlNet Features
Programming, processor-to processor interlocking, and I/O
control on the same link without impacting time-critical I/O
Media options to fit your application needs including copper, fiber,
fiber ring, media redundancy, and intrinsically-safe
Improves I/O performance and controller-to-controller interlocking
with high-speed data throughput
Supports a maximum of 99 nodes, with no minimum distance
between nodes
Simple and flexible installation options available
Access the network from any node for PLC processor
programming and troubleshooting
Improved network efficiency with Multicast of inputs and peer-topeer data
Deterministic, repeatable transfers of data to/from digital and
analog I/O
Producer / Consumer services let you configure devices, control,
and collect information over a single network

EtherNet/IP
Frustrated with different networks for business,
office, plant floor and everything in-between?
Want to control your machinery, supervise your
factory, manage your enterprise and surf the
Web with just one network?
Take the next step in achieving your goals with
EtherNet/IP. EtherNet/IP (Ethernet Industrial
Protocol) is an open industrial networking
standard that supports both real-time I/O
messaging and message exchange.

EtherNet/IP Features
Widely available Rockwell Automation and 3rd party
products and services worldwide
Flexible speeds to support both 10 and 100M bit/s
products
View control information from anywhere, anytime from a
standard Web browser using products with built-in Web
server capability
Wide variety of media options (copper, fiber, fiber ring,
wireless) available
Producer/Consumer services let you configure devices,
control, and collect information over a single network
Low integration and maintenance costs with one network
from device to business system
Provides the tools to use Ethernet technology in
industrial control applications
