Interviewer

How do you read a journal article?

Respondent A

I read the abstract, then I read the keywords. After that I

go through the subheadings. After I am able to identify
that the article is what I want then I would read it word
by word.

Respondent B

First, I use the search engine especially google scholar. I

type a string of keywords. Then I read the title. After the
title I would read the abstract. Sometimes I dont really
understand so I copy and paste into google translater.

Respondent C

I also have problem with my English. So I copy and paste

into MSWord. I use the thesaurus and synonym feature
to assist me in my understanding

Q.1 Current use of time

In an ordinary week, how do you currently spend your time?
(What takes most time, how much time spent on work, family,
leisure etc?)
I am still studying so an ordinary week for me is mainly spent
studying and working part time. I send about 32 hours a week
at work, 6 contact hours at university, and I spend my
weekends and evenings studying. I also play Netball and
attend a Yoga class of an evening once a week.
Q.1a Feelings about current time use?
(How do you feel about your time use now? Does it fit with your
goals? Are there other things youd like to fit in?)
Look, its as effective as it can possibly be given my current
commitments. I do wish I had more leisure time to spend with
my friends and family and my partner. I also wish I had time
to take dancing classes and learn a second language, but these
things will need to wait until I have completed my course.

PROJECTS

18

THE ADVANTAGES OF USING NVIVO

Coding
Developing external relationship
Adding the respondents attributes
Rearranging the coding system
Searching for the code, texts and others
Developing models

19

ATTRIBUTES

Both documents and nodes can have attributes

whose values can represent any property you
like.

e.g. 1. gender = female/male

2. age= 35/ 35-40
3. qualification= PMR/SPM/Diploma/Degree

20

DONT FORGET

To arrange appointment according to

respondents convenience
Prepare letter/s for the gatekeepers

Focus Group Interview Transcriptions
Individual Interview Transcriptions
Pictures
Texts
Documents
Social Media
External
1. Other related documents
2. It may not be imported
3. We could use hyperlink to the targeted file
Memos
Important notes in the observations

22

NODES
TREE NODES
Notes which are already established in the
hierarchy (e.g.: parent node and child note)
CASES
Notes which could be associated with other
attributes such as gender and age. They could be
established in the hierarchy
23

NODES

RELATIONSHIPS
Nodes which have relationship with other projects.
(e.g: relationship between two cases and two nodes)
MATRICES
A group of nodes which is the product of matrix
coding query
QUERIES
Places that we keep our queries
MODELS
Illustrations about a project or an analysis
