2.2. Objects in SAP Netweaver: Definitions

InfoProvider
Are objects for which the queries in SAP BW can be created or executed. Contains :

Physical data.: InfoCubes, ODS objects, and InfoObjects (characteristics with attributes, texts, etc)

No physical data: InfoSets, RemoteCubes, SAP RemoteCubes, and MultiProviders.

Info Cube
An InfoCube is a group of relational tables arranged according to the star schema.

It is also an object that can function as both a data target and an InfoProvider.

Transformation

With transformations, data loaded within the SAP NetWeaver BI system from the specified interfaces is
transferred from a source format to a target format in the data warehouse layers.

The transformation permits you to consolidate, clean up and integrate the data and thus to synchronize it
technically and semantically, permitting it to be evaluated.

Info Area:
An InfoArea is a directory of InfoProviders and InfoObject catalogs used in the same
business context. Every InfoProvider or InfoObject catalog belongs to exactly one single
InfoArea.
Info Object Catolog
InfoObject Catalog is a collection of InfoObjects grouped according to application
specific criteria. There are two types of InfoObject catalogs: Characteristic and Key
Figure.

Key figures provide the values to be

analyzed. They can be quantities,
amounts, or numbers of items, for
example Admission Time, Discharge
Time and Duration Time.
Characteristics are sorting keys, such
as product, customer group, fiscal year,
period, or region.

2.2. Objects in SAP Netweaver: Definitions

Info Source
Data that logically belongs together and is stored in the SAP (BW) System in the form of InfoSources.
An InfoSource contains a number of InfoObjects which defined the structure and information needed to create InfoCubes / ODS
Objects in the SAP (BW) System.
An InfoSource is an object that, at the request of SAP (BW) System, makes data available to the InfoCubes .

Data Transfer Process

DTP is used to transfer data within BI from one persistent object to another object, in accordance with certain
transformations and filters.

PSA (Persistent Staging Area)

After being extracted from a source system, data is transferred to the entry layer of the
Enterprise Data Warehouse, the persistent staging area (PSA). The data from the
source system is stored unchanged in this layer. It provides the backup status at a
granular level and can offer further information at a later time in order to ensure a quick
restart if an error occurs.

Data Source
A DataSource is a set of fields that provide the data for a business unit for data transfer into BI.
From a technical viewpoint, the DataSource is a set of logically-related fields that are provided to
transfer data into BI in a flat structure (the extraction structure), or in multiple flat structures (for
hierarchies).
Types of DataSource:

DataSource for transaction data

DataSource for master data

Info package
Infopackage is Data loading Scheduler from where You can execute your extraction of data from
Source system.
Info Package also an object which is used to load data from one target to other in BW system.
