Introduction

Rivers are sources of

life
Water supply
Rich biodiversity
Irrigation for agriculture
Transportation
Source of food and income
Hydro-electric power

HOWEVER
easy conduits for the discharge of

varying domestic, commercial,

industrial and agricultural effluents
via their natural function as
drainage channels.

Recently, with the rapid development of

Malaysia, agriculture expansion and

industrialisation have overstressed the
river systems.
Great amounts of human wastes has
resulted in a large number of polluted
rivers.
Even so, many rivers can still be restored
and rehabilitated given the right kind of
efforts.

Cause & Effect

of river pollution

Cause of river pollution

Direct discharge of waste water from

Industrial area
Garbage threw into the river
Development of agriculture land
Uncontrolled logging activities and
deforestation
Sand mining beside river bank

Waste water discharged

Increase the acidity of water
COD&BOD level increase
Odor

Garbage disposed
Reduce depth of river bed
Block the river flow
Flash flood

Agriculture Developed
Chemical pesticide and fertilizer
Washed off into the soil
Euthrophiation

Deforestation & Logging activities

Leaves

-reduce rainfall impact

Roots
- absorb water from soil
- hold the soil in place
Causes flood

Sand Mining
Increase the river erosion
Chemical/oil spill, contaminate the river
Impact to living thing in river

Discussion
Parts

How to solve?
Upgrade sewerage facilities
Set up regional sewerage treatment

plants.
Preventing the excess of sullage in the

river to block the water flow .

How to solve?
Avoid urban development near to river
For example:
restaurants, workshops and other commercial

outlets
industrial effluent and rubbish disposal

River Management
Corrective Measures
)Curative Measures
)Preventive Measures

1) Corrective Measures
Definition :
Corrective measures or techniques are

intended to put right into something that is

wrong.
To prevent the recurrence of an event that

caused the problem initially

Example
1. Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) :
correct the problem
process of coordinating conservation,
management and development of water
land and related resources sectors within a
given river basin.

2) Curative Measures
Definition :
Pertaining to curing or remedial treatment.
Use biological way to treat the pollution.

Example
1. Effective Micro-organisms (EM)
) treat the thick layer of sludge

River pollution is getting

worse in Malaysia
3 types river management
(Corrective Measures, Curative Measures,
Preventive Measures)
Need involvement and commitment of all the
parties in Malaysia.
Important to protect our river from pollution
