Launch NVivo
To launch Nvivo
Choose the Nvivo 10 shortcut icon on
your desktop or (windows 8) choose
apps by category and then click
NVivo 10

To create a project
1) On the welcome screen, click the
new project button. The New
project dialog is displayed.

2) Enter a name for your project in the
Title field.
3) Optionally, enter a description of
your project in the Description
field.
4) Click OK. The NVivo window is
displayed with the name of your
project in the title bar.

Status Bar
The horizontal area at the bottom of
the NVivo window.
Provides information about the
current state of what is displayed in
the window, along with other
contextual information. It also shows
the initials of the current user.

You can also add, remove or reorder
the columns in the current List
View. Select the View menu and
choose list view, customize
Current View.
Detail View
By default, when an item is opened
in Detail View it is displayed
underneath List View. To change the
Detail View to appear to the right,
select the View menu and choose
Details View>Right.

In Nvivo, sources are categorized into
the following types:
Internals
Externals
Memos
Sources
Sources
Internals-the material that you can
import or create in your NVivo
project. These may include data such
as interview recordings, field notes,
photos, email messages or video
recordings of focus group.
Sources
Externals-used for material that you
cant import into NVivo such as a
reference book in the library,
handwritten diaries or letters, paper
based newspaper articles or web
pages.
Memos
Memos-used to capture those
thoughts and insights you have when
you are working with your data.

In Navigation view click Sources,
then Internals folder.
Right-click on Internals and choose
New Folder.

Importing documents
You can import text files in the
following formats into NVivo:

In Navigation View, click Sources.
Click internals then interviews to
make this the destination folder.
Click in List View.
Right-click and choose Import
internals. The import internals dialog
is displayed.

Your documents are imported and
will be displayed in the List View.

Note: You can also drag and drop a
file from Windows Explorer directly to
an Internals folder.
Open a document
Locate the document in List View.
Double-click on the document name.
The document is displayed in Detail
View.
You can open several documents at
once and move from one document
to another by clicking the tab at the
top of Detail View.

Create memo
In Navigation View, click Sources.
Click the Memos folder.
Right-click in List View, and choose New
Memo. The New Memo dialog is displayed.
Enter a name in the Name field. If required,
enter a description of the memo in the
Description field.
Click OK. The new memo is opened in Detail
View ready for you to enter text.

Uncoding
Open the node and click the
Reference tab to show all content
coded to this node, then select the
text that you wish to uncode.
Right-click and choose Uncode
Selection, then choose At This
Node.
Click OK. The node will refresh and
update with the selected text
removed.
