What is Kevlar?
Kevlar is a strong fibrous material that is lab made or synthetic. It is very
strong and has been used in many products, the most popular one being
body armor. Kevlar was patented by DuPont, the company that the inventor
of Kevlar sold the patent to. Originally DuPont was trying to find a material
to make lighter tires for a impending gas shortage.
Disciplines
The disciplines of engineering that were used in the discovery of Kevlar were mostly
Chemistry and Mechanical (with a side of electrical). The Kevlar solution (before it
became Kevlar) had to be sent through a wet spinner, which was a machine powered by
electricity. Of course everything that went on with the Kevlar is almost guaranteed to
deal with chemical/chemistry.
Improvements
Using new weaving technology, it has made the kevlar more durable to a bullet and
lightweight. (2008)
Patents
Braided orthotic products and methods of manufacture - protects one of the
processes used to make kevlar
Method for handling broken piece and broken piece handling bag for use with th
e method
- this patent is responsible to make sure that the way to dispose of Kevlar isnt copied
anywhere else
Annular blowout container (ABOC) - ABOCs prevent say an oil well from
releasing and blowing up from the pressure of the oil.
