Definition
A word or phrase that modifies
or qualifies an adjective, verb,
or other adverb or a word
group, expressing a relation of
place, time, circumstance,
manner, cause, degree, etc.
(e.g.,gently,quite,then,there
)

Sometimes it tells us more about adjectives:

.You look absolutely fabuluous.

 They can also modify other verbs.

.Please talk quietly.

In most cases,an adverb is formed by

adding -ly to an adjective.

 An adverb indicates manner,

time, place, cause, or degree and
answers questions such as
"how," "when," "where," "how

ADVERBS OF MANNER
tell us how something happens.
Placed after the main verb or after the object.
Examples: angrily, carefully, carelessly,
cautiously, clearly,happily, and thoughtfully.

ideas.
.Joe ate hungrily.
.You have cooked the meat
beautifully.
.I sing very badly.

ADVERBS OF PLACE
Tells

us where something happens.

Placed after the main verb or after
the object.
Examples:
along,away,back,down,here,there and
up.

. He went inside.
.We stay here.
.Ann looked up.
.They live there.
.I sent the package back.

ADVERBS OF TIME
Tells us when an action happened, but also for
how long, and how often .
Examples:later, next, now, soon, then, today,
tomorrow, and yesterday.

.We will call soon.

.Jack bought the gift today.
.There are coming next week.
.I m still hungry.
.They arrived late there.

ADVERBS OF CERTAINTY
Express how certain or sure we feel about an
action or event.
Examples: certainly, definitely, probably,
undoubtedly, surely.

. He

is probably in the park.

.Obviously they will never see
her again.
.He definitely left the house this
morning.

Adverbs of Frequency
Answers the question "How often?" or "How
frequently?.
Tells us how often somebody does something.
Examples: always, never, normally,
occasionaly, often, rarely, seldom, sometimes
and usually.

Miss Alice is usually on

time.

early.
. He always disturbs others
in the class
.

ADVERBS OF DEGREE
Tells us about the degree of
an action, an adjective or
another adverb.
Examples:quite, too, very,
extremely, completely, totally,
seriously, surely, really, scarcely

.I can hardly expect her to
understand.
.He is seriously ill.

INTERROGATIVE ADVERBS
These are :
why,where,how,when
They are usually placed at the beginning of a
question.

.How do you plan to spend your

holiday?
.Where is the other girl?
.How are you ?

RELATIVE ADVERBS
The following adverbs can be used to join
sentences or clauses.
where, when, why
.I dont know why he left.
.When he came,I was listening music.
.This is the dormitory where students
can stay.
