DEFINITION

Literal meaning : Disbelief, Denial or Infidelity

The term refers to a person who rejects Allah or who hides,
denies or covers the truth.
Quran uses the words kafir (disbeliever), kuffar
(disbelievers) and kufr 470 times in 451 different verses.
The word kafir is the active participle of the root k-f-r to
cover
Indeed we have earned you of a near punishment on
the day when a man will observe what his hands have
put forth and the disbeliever will say, Oh, I wish that
I were dust ! (78:40)

PILLARS OF KUFR
KIBR

Arrogance ; which prevents him from

submission, (to the command of Allah)
HASAD Jealousy; which prevents him from
accepting advice and giving it.
GHADAB Anger ; which prevents him from
being just.
SHAWAH Lowly desires ; which prevents
him from devoting himself totally to worship.

 The

opposite of kufr is imaan, Belief

In terminology of islamic doctrine, anyone who
does not have faith commit kufr ( disbelief )
Person who commits disbelief is called kafir
Every non-muslim, whether atheist, agnostic,
jew, buddhist or the like is a kafir.
The believers are only those who believe
in Allah and His messenger (prophet
Muhammad) and have no doubt

TATIL

Denial of Allahs attributes.

TASHBIH Resembling of Allah to the
creations in one way or another.
TAKHDHIB Belying or rejecting what
is well-established and commonly known
as religion, e.g; obligation of the five daily
prayers.

GENERAL CATEGORIES OF
DISBELIEVERS

THOSE WHO ARE LEGALLY

ACCOUNTABLE (MUKALLAF)

Any non-muslim who are sane, pubescent and has

heard shahadah in a language he understands is
considered an accountable kafir, and is obligated to
immediately embrace Islam.

THOSE WHO ARE NOT

If the non-muslim was prebuscent, insane, or never

heard the declaration of faith, then he is not
accountable.

 Indeed,

those who desbelieve and

die while they are disbelievers upon
them will be the curse of Allah and of
the angels and the people, all
together, abiding eternally therein.
The punishment will not be lightened
for them, nor will they be reprieved.
(Baqarah ; 161-162)

TYPES OF KUFR
KUFR

AL-INAD: DISBELIEF OUT OF STUBBORNESS.

- someone who knows the truth and admits to knowing the
truth with his tongue , but refuses to accept it and refrains
from making declaration.
Throw into Hell every stubborn disbeliever. (Qaf 50:24)

KUFR

AN-INKAR: DISBELIEF OF DENIAL.

Who denies with both heart and tongue.
They recognize the favors of Allah, yet they deny them. Most of them
are disbelievers. (Nahl 16:83)

KUFR

AL-KIBR: DISBELIEF OUT OF ARROGANCE AND PRIDE.

The disbelief by the devils is an example of this type of kufr

KUFR

AL-JUHUD: DISBELIEF OF REJECTION.

Who acknowledge the truth in his heart, but rejects it with his tongue.
This tye of kufr is applicable to those who calls themselves Muslims but
reject any necessary and accepted norms of Islam such as Salat and Zakat.
They denied them (Our Signs) even though their hearts believed in
them, out of spite and arrogance. (Naml 27:14)

KUFR AL-NIFAQ: DISBELIEF OUT OF HYPOCRISY.

applies to someone who pretends to be a believer but conceals his disbelief. Such a person
is called a Munfiq or hypocrite.
Verily the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of Hell. You will find no one to help
them.(Nis 4:145)
KUFR AL-ISTIHLAL: DISBELIEF OUT OF TRYING TO MAKE HARAM TO HALAL.
applies to someone who accepts as lawful (Hall) that which Allh has made unlawful (Harm) like
alcohol or adultery.
KUFR AL-KURH: DISBELIEF OUT OF DETESTING ANY OF ALLAHS COMMANDS.
Perdition (destruction) has been consigned to those who disbelieve and He will render
their actions void. This is because they are averse to that which Allh has revealed so He
has made their actions fruitless.(Muhammed 47: 8-9)
KUFR AL-ISTIHZA: DISBELIEF DUE TO MOCKERY AND DERISION.
Say: Was it at Allh, His signs and His apostles that you were mocking? Make no
excuses. You have disbelieved after you have believed.(Taubah 9: 65-66)

KUFR AL-IRAD: DISBELIEF DUE TO AVOIDANCE.

applies to those who turn away and avoid the truth.

And who is more unjust than he who is reminded of his Lords signs but then turns
away from them. Then he forgets what he has sent forward (for the Day of
Judgment).(Kahf 18: 57)

KUFR AL-ISTIBDAL: DISBELIEF BECAUSE OF TRYING TO

SUBSTITUTE ALLAHS LAWS.

This could take the form of:

(a) Rejection of Allhs law (Sharah) without denying it.

(b) Denial of Allhs law and therefore rejecting it, or.

(c) Substituting Allhs laws with man-made laws. Allh subhnah wa

tal says:

Or have they partners with Allh who have instituted for them a
religion which Allh has not allowed.(Shr 42:21)

TAKDIB: DENIAL OF TRUTH.

UNCERTAINTY

TURNING AWAY (RIDDAH)

Say not concerning that which your tongues

put forth falsely (that) is lawful and this is
forbidden so as to invent a lie against Allh.
Verily, those who invent a lie against Allh will
never prosper.( Nahl 16:116)

MINOR KUFR

the practical Kufr, does not constitute apostasy.

comprises of sins that are referred to in the Book and the
Sunnah as Kufr, but do not reach the level of major Kufr.

The examples of minor kufr:

Kufr Nikmat
deny God as the giver of grace to human beings and creatures
Use nikmat to bad path (maksiat)
refuse to issue a charity / sedekah
Spend lavishly
They recognize the favors of Allah, yet they deny them; most of
them are ungrateful disbelievers. Surah an Nahl ayah 83

expressing ungratefulness to the favors of Allah, as Allah say:

"And Allah sets forth for you a parable of a city which enjoyed

security and peace; its provision coming to it easefully from

everywhere; but it (Kafarat) denied the favors of Allah."[Soorah
an-Nahl (16): 112]
So Allah made it taste hunger and fear which were made to cleave to it
because of what they used to do.

And remember when your Lord made known, If you are grateful then I
will surely increase you but if you are ungrateful then surely My torment
is surely severe Surah Ibrahim ayah 7
Quarrel and have a fight

And fighting of Muslims against each other, which is referred to in the

Hadeeth of the Prophet (salallahu alaihe wa-sallam),
"Reviling of a Muslim is an act of disobedience and fighting him is
Kufr." [Agreed upon]

Likewise, swearing by other than Allah. The

Prophet * said: "He who swears by other than
Allah, commits an act of Kufr, or Shirk."
[Tirmidhee]

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MAJOR

AND MINOR KUFR:

CONCLUSION
Knowing what is disbelief is also a very important and
essential knowledge so that we can warn ourselves and
our companions from deviations. Allah mentioned
believers, hypocrites and unbelievers and their attributes
with examples in the beginning of the Quran
And believe in what I have sent down confirming that
which is [already] with you, and be not the first to
disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a
small price, and fear [only] Me
[Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 41]
