PRESENTATION
DESIGN APPROACH
1. Idea reference that represents a
concept (from existing
architectural styles or by Pioneer
thinkers)
2. Environmental Analysis
Presentation analysis and theories
to mitigate cause and effects of
the environment to the building
Technology integration

Example: MODERNISM
Modernist architecture emphasizes function.
It attempts to provide for specific needs
rather than imitate nature. The roots of
Modernism may be found in the work of
Berthold Luberkin (1901-1990), a Russian
architect who settled in London and
founded a group called Tecton. The Tecton
architects believed in applying scientific,
analytical methods to design. Their stark
buildings ran counter to expectations and
often seemed to defy gravity.

2. THEORY
PRESENTATION

THEORY AS DESIGN
APPROACH

Modernist architecture has these features:

Little or no ornamentation
Factory-made parts
Man-made materials such as metal and
concrete
Emphasis on function
Rebellion against traditional styles

PIONEER THINKERS
APPROACH

I.M. Pei is known for using large, abstract

forms and sharp, geometric designs. His
glass-clad structures seem to spring from
the high tech modernist movement.
However, Pei is more concerned with
function than theory. His works often
incorporate traditional Chinese symbols and
building traditions.
