Definition
Gamma

rays (often denoted

by the Greek letter gamma, )
is an energetic form of
electromagnetic radiation
produced by radioactivity or
nuclear or subatomic
processes such as electronpositron annihilation and
radioactive decay.

Inventor
Antoine Henri
Becquerel
In the end of 1890,
Bacquerel discovered
radioactivity inadvertently.
He covered the uranium salt
by using thick black paper
and put it on the
photographic plate. And
then he put it into the
drawer without exposed it to
sunlight first. A few days
later he found that the
photographic plate became
dark. He speculated that the
radiation is stronger than
the X ray.

Pierre-Marie
Curie
Marie-Pierre Currie interested
to research that mysterious
radiation and using
electrometer. Marie research
that mineral or nature stone
could show the more active
radiation. In last June 1898
Marie and Pierre Currie
success decided that
substance is new metal which
not found. They give the
substances name Polonium
and Radium.

Inventor
Paul Ulrich
Villard
Gamma ray is
discovered by French
chemist and physicist,
Paul Ulrich Villard in
1900 while studying the
radiation emanating
fromRadium, Polonium
and Uranium. He finds
that gamma-ray can not
be deflected by
magnetic fields.

Edward Neville da Costa Andrade

&
Ernest Rutherford

In 1914, Ernest Rutherford

and Edward Andrade showed
that gamma rays were a
form of electromagnetic
radiation by measuring their
wavelengths using crystal
diffraction. The measured
wavelengths were similar to
those of X-rays and are very
short. It was Ernest
Rutherford who named
gamma rays.

Preparation
Gamma
rays
are
produced from the decay
of atomic nuclei.

Gamma rays made from nuclear

process or the other subatomic like the
destroyed of electron-positron. Gamma
rays could be made from :

Star explotion (Supernova)

Nuclear bomb explotion

Star that being sucked by black hole

Bubble of energy in central galaxy of

Milky Way

Radioactive substance

Once the nucleus decays

into a new core usually
there is excess energy in
its core bond that is often
called the nucleus in an
excited state.
Core excess energy will
usually release energy in
the form of gamma rays,
known as decay gamma
rays are photons.

Preparation
Reaction
1. (alfa)

2.

alfa needs 2 protons and 2 neutrons, X become to Y and

.
(beta)
beta reflected by atom that have neutron number
greater than proton, for stabillity one of the neutron
changed to proton and one electron, the electron
reflecterd as .
(gamma)
+
gamma has no neutron and proton.

Frequency Range

Wavelenght

1010 meter - 1012 meter

Frequency
: 1018 - 1020 Hz
Gamma rays are electromagnetic wave which have the highest frequency and
the shortest wave. This wave has the big energy and can through metal and
concrete.

This

animation
tracks several
gamma rays through
space and time, from
their emission in the
jet of a distant blazar
to their arrival in
Fermi's Large Area
Telescope (LAT).

Telescope

A gamma camera, also

called a scintillation camera
or Anger camera, is a device
used to image gamma
radiation emitting
radioisotopes, a technique
known as scintigraphy. The
applications of scintigraphy
include early drug
development and nuclear
medical imaging to view
and analyse images of the
human body or the
distribution of medically
injected, inhaled, or
ingested radionuclides
emitting gamma rays.

Application

Gamma Camera

CT Scan is a
procedure used to
get a picture of a
variety of a small
angle of the skull
and brain .

Application

CT Scan

For

therapeutic
treatment of tumors
or brain tumors and
other abnormalities
in the brain without
having to dissect
skull bones .

Application

Gamma Knife

The tool is available source

there was cobalt-60, and is
capable of emitting radiation
as much as 0.75 Curies;
Radiation was captured by the

Characteristic or
Properties
Radiation

of short wavelength and high

frequency
Not deflected in a magnetic field
The greatest energy
The strongest penetration

Conclusion
Gamma

rays are an energetic

form of electromagnetic
radiation produced by
radioactivity or nuclear or
subatomic processes such as
electron-positron annihilation.
Gamma rays are the rays
that have the most powerful
of emerge power in
comparison with alpha and
beta rays, gamma rays are so
light that has a wavelength
higher than the other beam.

Gamma rays have the

biggest
energy
compared to most other.
Gamma
rays
are
generated
from
electromagnetic
radiation.
Gamma rays can not
defected by magnetic
fields.
