WHAT IS PNEUMATIC GAUGE ?

It is a device for measuring linear dimensions of machine and

mechanism parts.
It measures according to the flow rate of air escaping from
nozzle under pressure.
It appeared in 1920's when the French firm Sakma produced
instruments of the Solex type.
TYPES OF PNEUMATIC GAUGES

Free Flow Air Gauge(Flow or Velocity

Type)
Back pressure type Air Gauge
FREE FLOW AIR GAUGE

It is the type of Pneumatic gauge operated by sensing and

indicating the momentary rate of air flow.
Flow can be sensed by glass tube with the tapered bore
mounted over a graduated scale.Inside the bore a float is
lifted by the air flow.
PRESSURE
REGULATOR
-Regulate gas pressure and
measure flow rates
TAPERED TUBE
WITH FLOAT
It is a variable area meter which
Works on the principle of upthrust force
exerted by fluid and force of gravity.
WORKING OF FREE FLOW AIR GAUGE

Filtered compressed and pressure regulated air is flowed through the

tapered glass tube having small float.
Then it flows through the plastic tube to the gauge head having two
diametrically opposed orifice for air escapement into atmosphere.
The gauge is provided with the Zero adjustment and magnification
adjustment
The float can be zeroed by a bleed valve installed at the top of the
tube.
Size is measured by the velocity of air in the tapered glass
tube which is measured by the height of the float in tube.
On the gauge, knobs are also provided for adjusting float position and
calibration.
Air gauge amplification and range are based on the tooling and
instrument standards of manufacturer.
ADVANTAGES

The gauging member does not come in contact with the parts to be
measured and hence practically no wear takes place on the gauging
member.
Having less number of moving parts due to which it has more accuracy and
less friction and inertia.
The jet of pressure of air helps in clearing the dust and foreign particles from
the glass tube so accurate reading is measured
It is probably the best method to determine the taperness of circular bores
and diameter of the holes.
DISADVANTAGES

It requires elaborated auxiliary equipment such as accurate pressure

regulator.
The scale is generally not uniform.
When indicating device is the glass tube the high magnification is
necessary in order to avoid the meniscus errors.
The apparatus is not easily portable and is rather elaborate for many
industrial applications.
Different gauging heads are required for different dimensions.
APPLICATIONS

It can be used to measure bore diameters, length, squareness,

parallelism, concentricity, taper, centre distance between holes and
other geometric conditions.
SPHERICAL INTERNAL DIAMETER

We can measure the Internal

Diameter of the spherical
work piece.
SQUARENESS TEST
With the output pressure difference
of the air We can test about the
squareness of the work piece.
