Sacrifice of
the Mass
Churchs Teaching:
1. The Holy Mass is the Sacrifice
of the Body and Blood of Jesus
Christ offered on our altars
under the appearances of bread
and wine, in commemoration of
the Sacrifice of the Cross.

2. Christ instituted the Holy

Sacrifice of the Mass.

3. The Mass is the Perfect Sacrifice

under the New Law.

4. The Mass Is The Same Sacrifice

As That Of The Cross.
Churchs Teachings:
5. The Mass is A
Sacrifice Of Praise,
Thanksgiving And
Propitiation.

6. The Mass Profits

Both The Living And
The Dead.

7. Only a validly
ordained priest can
celebrate a Mass.
When did Christ
institute the
Eucharist?
Christ instituted the
Holy EUCHARIST on
the evening before his
death, on the night
when he was
betrayed (1 Cor
11:23), when he
gathered the
APOSTLES around
him in the Upper
Room in Jerusalem
and celebrated the
Last Supper with
them.
1 Cor. 11:23-26
ForI received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, thatthe
23

Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,24and when
he had given thanks, he broke it, and said,This is my body which is
for[e]you. Do this in remembrance of me.[f]25In the same way also he
took the cup, after supper, saying,This cup is the new covenant in my
blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.26For
as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the
Lord's deathuntil he comes.

At
CCC 1323
"At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior
instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. This he
did in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the
ages until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved
Spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a
sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal
banquet 'in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace,
and a pledge of future glory is given to us.
CCC1337
The Lord, having loved those who
were his own, loved them to the
end. Knowing that the hour had
come to leave this world and
return to the Father, in the course
of a meal he washed their feet and
gave them the commandment of
love (Jn 13:1-17; 34-35). In order
to leave them a pledge of this
love, in order never to depart
from his own and to make them
sharers in his Passover, he
instituted the Eucharist as the
memorial of his death and
Resurrection, and commanded his
apostles to celebrate it until his
return.
John 13:1-17 Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet
A new commandmentI give to you, that you love one another:just as I
34

have loved you, you also are to love one another.35By this all people will
know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

isat isa.
CCC1339
Jesus chose the time of Passover to fulfill what he had
announced at Capernaum: giving his disciples his
Body and his Blood.
164Lk 22:7-20; Cf. Mt 26:17-29; Mk 14:12-25; 1 Cor
11:23-26.
CCC 1340
By celebrating the Last Supper with his apostles in the course of the
Passover meal, Jesus gave the Jewish Passover its definitive
meaning. Jesus' passing over to his father by his death and
Resurrection, the new Passover, is anticipated in the Supper and
celebrated in the Eucharist, which fulfills the Jewish Passover and
anticipates the final Passover of the Church in the glory of the
kingdom.
How can Jesus distribute his Body and his Blood? By
making the bread into his Body and the wine into his
Blood, he anticipates his death, he accepts it in his
heart, and he transforms it into an action of love. What
on the outside is simply brutal violencethe Crucifixion
from within becomes an act of total self-giving love.
POPE BENEDICT XVI,
August 21, 2005
Why is the Mass is the Perfect
Sacrifice under the New Law?
What is Sacrifice?

Sacrifice is the offering to God, our Creator and

Father, of a visible gift as a token of the offering
of ourselves.

Pope Leo XIII, Caritatis stadium;

The very essence and nature of religion implies
the necessity of Sacrifice. In that resides the
most important element of divine worship. It
consist in acknowledging and adoring God as
supreme Lord of all, under whose dominion we
are with all that we posseses. Indeed, there is no
other justification, no other reason for the
existence of Sacrifice; because of this it is
properly called a divine thing. If Sacrifices are
suppressed, no religion will subsist and even the
idea of it cannot be conceived.
CCC1366
The Eucharist is thus a sacrifice because
it re-presents (makes present) the
sacrifice of the cross, because it is its
memorial and because it applies its fruit:
[Christ], our Lord and God, was once
and for all to offer himself to God the
Father by his death on the altar of the
cross, to accomplish there an everlasting
redemption. But because his priesthood
was not to end with his death, at the
Last Supper "on the night when he was
betrayed," [he wanted] to leave to his
beloved spouse the Church a visible
sacrifice (as the nature of man demands)
by which the bloody sacrifice which he
was to accomplish once for all on the
cross would be re-presented, its memory
perpetuated until the end of the world,
and its salutary power be applied to the
forgiveness of the sins we daily commit.
Cor 11:23; Heb 7:24, 27.
Heb 7:24, 27
23
The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death
from continuing in office,24but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he
continuesforever.25Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost[b]those who
draw near to Godthrough him, since he always livesto make intercession for them.
For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent,
26

unstained, separated from sinners, andexalted above the heavens.27He has no

need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then

for those of the people, since he did thisonce for all when he offered up himself.

siyang lagi upang ipagdasal sila.
26Ganito nga ang punong paring kailangan natin: banal, walang kasalanan o
Why is The Mass The
Same Sacrifice As That Of
The Cross?
CCC 1367
The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice
of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice:
"The victim is one and the same: the
same now offers through the ministry of
priests, who then offered himself on the
cross; only the manner of offering is
different." "And since in this divine
sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass,
the same Christ who offered himself
once in a bloody manner on the altar of
the cross is contained and is offered in
an unbloody manner... this sacrifice is
truly propitiatory."188Council of Trent

c. 2: DS 1743; cf. Heb 9:14, 27.
Hebrews 9:14, 27

consciencefrom dead worksto serve the living God.

27
And just asit is appointed for man to die once, andafter that comes
judgment .

hukom.
We therefore confess that the Sacrifice of the
Mass is and ought to be considered one and
the same Sacrifice as that of the cross, for
the victim is one and the same, namely,
Christ our Lord, who offered Himself, once
only, a bloody Sacrifice on the altar of the
cross. The bloody and unbloody victim are
not two, but one victim only, whose Sacrifice
is daily renewed in the Eucharist, in
obedience to the command of our Lord: Do
this for a commemoration of me.
The priest is also one and the same, Christ
the Lord; for the ministers who offer
Sacrifice, consecrate the holy mysteries, not
in their own person, but in that of Christ, as
the words of consecration itself show, for the
priest does not say: This is the body of
Christ, but, This is my body; and thus,
acting in the Person of Christ the Lord, he
changes the substance of the bread and
wine into the true substance of His body
and blood.
Why is The Mass considered
A Sacrifice Of Praise,
Thanksgiving And
Propitiation?

CCC 1359
The Eucharist, the sacrament of our
salvation accomplished by Christ on
the cross, is also a sacrifice of praise in
thanksgiving for the work of creation.
In the Eucharistic sacrifice the whole of
creation loved by God is presented to
the Father through the death and the
Resurrection of Christ. Through Christ
the Church can offer the sacrifice of
praise in thanksgiving for all that God
has made good, beautiful, and just in
creation and in humanity.

CCC1360
The Eucharist is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father, a
blessing by which the Church expresses her gratitude to God for all
his benefits, for all that he has accomplished through creation,
redemption, and sanctification. Eucharist means first of all
"thanksgiving. 2 Cor. 9:15
2 Cor. 9:15

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible

gift!

15Salamat sa Diyos dahil sa kanyang

kaloob na di-mabibigkas!
CCC 1361
The Eucharist is also the sacrifice of praise by which the Church
sings the glory of God in the name of all creation. This sacrifice of
praise is possible only through Christ: he unites the faithful to his
person, to his praise, and to his intercession, so that the sacrifice
of praise to the Father is offered through Christ and with him, to
be accepted in him. 1 Cor. 15:28
1 Cor. 15:28
Whenall things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will
28

also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under

him, thatGod may be all in all.

CCC1367
The sacrifice of Christ and the
sacrifice of the Eucharist are
one single sacrifice: "The victim
is one and the same: the same
now offers through the ministry
of priests, who then offered
himself on the cross; only the
manner of offering is different."
"And since in this divine
sacrifice which is celebrated in
the Mass, the same Christ who
offered himself once in a bloody
manner on the altar of the cross
is contained and is offered in an
unbloody manner... this
sacrifice is truly
propitiatory. Heb. 9:14, 27
What is propitiation?

Answer:The wordpropitiationcarries the basic idea of

appeasement or satisfaction, specifically toward God.
Propitiation is a two-part act that involves appeasing the wrath
of an offended person and being reconciled to him. (Hebrew 2:17)

Hebrew 2:17

Therefore he hadto be made like his brothers in every respect,so

17

that he might become a merciful and faithful high priestin the service
of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

The Mass A Sacrifice Of Praise, Thanksgiving And Propitiation
This being the case, it must be taught without any hesitation that, as the
holy Council (of Trent) has also) explained, the sacred and holy Sacrifice of
the Mass is not a Sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving only, or a mere
commemoration of the Sacrifice performed on the cross, but also truly a
propitiatory Sacrifice, by which God is appeased and rendered propitious
to us. If, therefore, with a pure heart, a lively faith, and affected with an
inward sorrow for our transgressions, we immolate and offer this most
holy victim, we shall, without doubt, obtain mercy from the Lord, and
grace in time of need; for SO delighted is the Lord with the door of this
victim that, bestowing on us the gift of grace and repentance, He pardons
our sins. Hence this usual prayer of the Church: As often as the
commemoration of this victim is celebrated, so often is the work of our
salvation being done; that is to say, through this unbloody Sacrifice flow
to us the most plenteous fruits of that bloody victim.
How does the mass profits the living and the dead?

CCC 1414
As sacrifice, the Eucharist is also offered in reparation for the
sins of the living and the dead and to obtain spiritual or
temporal benefits from God.
The Mass Profits Both The Living And The Dead
Pastors should next teach that such is the efficacy of this Sacrifice that
its benefits extend not only to the celebrant and communicant, but to all
the faithful, whether living with us on earth, or already numbered with
those who are dead in the Lord, but whose sins have not yet been fully
expiated. For, according to the most authentic Apostolic tradition, it is
not less available when offered for them, than when offered for the sins
of the living, their punishments, satisfactions, calamities and difficulties
of every sort.
It is hence easy to perceive, that all Masses, as being conducive to the
common interest and salvation of all the faithful, are to be considered
common to all.
CCC 1405
There is no surer pledge or
dearer sign of this great
hope in the new heavens
and new earth "in which
righteousness dwells, (2
Peter 3:13) than the
Eucharist. Every time this
mystery is celebrated, "the
work of our redemption is
carried on" and we "break
the one bread that provides
the medicine of
immortality, the antidote
for death, and the food that
makes us live for ever in
Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 3:13
But according to his promise we are waiting
13

fornew heavens and a new earthin which

righteousness dwells.

13Naghihintay naman tayo ng bagong langit at ng

bagong lupa na pinaghaharian ng katarungan gaya
ng ipinangako ng Diyos.
CCC 1370
To the offering of Christ are
united not only the members
still here on earth, but also
those already in the glory of
heaven. In communion with
and commemorating the
Blessed Virgin Mary and all
the saints, the Church offers
the Eucharistic sacrifice. In
the Eucharist the Church is
as it were at the foot of the
cross with Mary, united with
the offering and intercession
of Christ.
CCC 1371
The Eucharistic sacrifice is also offered for the faithful
departed who "have died in Christ but are not yet wholly
purified, so that they may be able to enter into the light and
peace of Christ:

Put this body anywhere! Don't trouble yourselves about it! I

simply ask you to remember me at the Lord's altar wherever
you are. Then, we pray [in the anaphora] for the holy fathers
and bishops who have fallen asleep, and in general for all who
have fallen asleep before us, in the belief that it is a great
benefit to the souls on whose behalf the supplication is
offered, while the holy and tremendous Victim is present.... By
offering to God our supplications for those who have fallen
asleep, if they have sinned, we . . . offer Christ sacrificed for
the sins of all, and so render favorable, for them and for us,
the God who loves man.
Who can preside in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass?

CCC 1411
Only validly ordained priests can preside at the Eucharist and
consecrate the bread and the wine so that they become the Body
and Blood of the Lord.
Lk: 6:13-16
13 And when day was come, he called unto him his disciples; and he chose twelve of
them (whom also he named apostles): 14 Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew
his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15 Matthew and Thomas, James
the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes, 16 And Jude, the brother of
James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.

Lk. 22: 19-20 19j

Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This
is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.20And likewise the
cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will
be shed for you.
