Sacrifice of
the Mass
Churchs Teaching:
1. The Holy Mass is the Sacrifice
of the Body and Blood of Jesus
Christ offered on our altars
under the appearances of bread
and wine, in commemoration of
the Sacrifice of the Cross.
7. Only a validly
ordained priest can
celebrate a Mass.
When did Christ
institute the
Eucharist?
Christ instituted the
Holy EUCHARIST on
the evening before his
death, on the night
when he was
betrayed (1 Cor
11:23), when he
gathered the
APOSTLES around
him in the Upper
Room in Jerusalem
and celebrated the
Last Supper with
them.
1 Cor. 11:23-26
ForI received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, thatthe
23
Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,24and when
he had given thanks, he broke it, and said,This is my body which is
for[e]you. Do this in remembrance of me.[f]25In the same way also he
took the cup, after supper, saying,This cup is the new covenant in my
blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.26For
as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the
Lord's deathuntil he comes.
have loved you, you also are to love one another.35By this all people will
know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
for those of the people, since he did thisonce for all when he offered up himself.
siyang lagi upang ipagdasal sila.
26Ganito nga ang punong paring kailangan natin: banal, walang kasalanan o
Why is The Mass The
Same Sacrifice As That Of
The Cross?
CCC 1367
The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice
of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice:
"The victim is one and the same: the
same now offers through the ministry of
priests, who then offered himself on the
cross; only the manner of offering is
different." "And since in this divine
sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass,
the same Christ who offered himself
once in a bloody manner on the altar of
the cross is contained and is offered in
an unbloody manner... this sacrifice is
truly propitiatory."188Council of Trent
(1562): Doctrina de ss. Missae Sacrificio,
c. 2: DS 1743; cf. Heb 9:14, 27.
Hebrews 9:14, 27
27
And just asit is appointed for man to die once, andafter that comes
judgment .
CCC 1359
The Eucharist, the sacrament of our
salvation accomplished by Christ on
the cross, is also a sacrifice of praise in
thanksgiving for the work of creation.
In the Eucharistic sacrifice the whole of
creation loved by God is presented to
the Father through the death and the
Resurrection of Christ. Through Christ
the Church can offer the sacrifice of
praise in thanksgiving for all that God
has made good, beautiful, and just in
creation and in humanity.

that he might become a merciful and faithful high priestin the service
of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
CCC 1414
As sacrifice, the Eucharist is also offered in reparation for the
sins of the living and the dead and to obtain spiritual or
temporal benefits from God.
The Mass Profits Both The Living And The Dead
Pastors should next teach that such is the efficacy of this Sacrifice that
its benefits extend not only to the celebrant and communicant, but to all
the faithful, whether living with us on earth, or already numbered with
those who are dead in the Lord, but whose sins have not yet been fully
expiated. For, according to the most authentic Apostolic tradition, it is
not less available when offered for them, than when offered for the sins
of the living, their punishments, satisfactions, calamities and difficulties
of every sort.
It is hence easy to perceive, that all Masses, as being conducive to the
common interest and salvation of all the faithful, are to be considered
common to all.
CCC 1405
There is no surer pledge or
dearer sign of this great
hope in the new heavens
and new earth "in which
righteousness dwells, (2
Peter 3:13) than the
Eucharist. Every time this
mystery is celebrated, "the
work of our redemption is
carried on" and we "break
the one bread that provides
the medicine of
immortality, the antidote
for death, and the food that
makes us live for ever in
Jesus Christ.

CCC 1411
Only validly ordained priests can preside at the Eucharist and
consecrate the bread and the wine so that they become the Body
and Blood of the Lord.
Lk: 6:13-16
13 And when day was come, he called unto him his disciples; and he chose twelve of
them (whom also he named apostles): 14 Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew
his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15 Matthew and Thomas, James
the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes, 16 And Jude, the brother of
James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.
