Abstract

EGPRS Prioritized Over GPRS makes it possible to utilize the available PS bandwidth
within a cell more efficiently. This is done by setting a weight priority for EGPRS users
compared to GPRS users. This weight priority shall be applied both to TBF reservation
and scheduling.

When possible, E-PDCHs shall have higher priority over B- and G-PDCHs in regards to pre-
emption. In other words, when this feature is turned on in a cell, E-PDCHs shall only be
pre-empted if it is not possible to first pre-empt B- and/or G-PDCHs.

One way to increase bandwidth for PS is to prioritize EGPRS over GPRS on the EGPRS
capable channels. This would mean that the bandwidth of the cell would increase, since
E-TBFs typically produces 2-3 times the bandwidth compared to B-TBFs.

EFACTOR Value from 2 ~ 99, G-TBF can be converted to B-TBF, which could be
dynamically re-reserved to B-PDCH, the ratio of G-TBF and E-TBF scheduling

BSC Level Analysis - I

Changing the EFACTOR i.e. prioritizing EDGE over GPRS 50:1 & 75:1 shows
drastic reduction in GPRS usage and TBF Establishments as below

BSC Level Analysis - II

% of E-TBFs were already over 99%, these have shown an increase after EFACTOR
change; as expected. While change of EFACTOR 50 to 75 has not mattered much. To give
a reasonable opportunity to B/G-TBFs on EPDCH timeslots, the value was shown as 10
and no impact i.e. increase in B-TBFs was observed.

Cell Level check was also made

with the change in value of
EFACTOR to 10 with no change
observed, G-TBFs remained as
before.

BSC Level Analysis - III

Throughput for GPRS has shown a slight decrease, this is due to the reduction in GPRS
Data (B- & G- TBFs) while EDGE throughput has not shown a change due to the minimal
impact of GPRS traffic which is less than 1% of the total data.

Cell Level Analysis in the following slides will show better comparisons.

Cell Level Analysis - I

Cell 1584C is the highest B-TBF (GPRS Data) generating cell and TBF Failures due to
limitations on A-bis (Further EPDCHs are not definable). Results show with the use of EPOG
the B-TBFs came down while E-TBFs increased. No increase in PDCH/TBF Establishment
Failure observed.

Cell Level Analysis - II

The cell 1584C was chosen due to its already limited channel availability for both CS/PS,
such an obvious case for capacity restraint would show more obvious capacity increase
due to better spectrum efficiency of EDGE.
Observations were as expected and an increase of ~300 MBytes per day has
been seen.

Cell Level Analysis - III

Decrease in EFACTOR from 75 to 10 has minimal impact even on cell level, implying
resource usage for G-TBFs is not restricted and established wherever required but with a
lower priority hence the before mentioned capacity enhancement.

Conclusion

With increasing the priority of radio resources for EGPRS user for EPDCHs, the
optimization improved the spectrum use with packing higher number of ETBFs on the
defined EPDCHs. Slight decrease in GPRS Throughput was seen but at the cost of better
EDGE Performance. And taking into account the larger proportion and better performance
of EGPRS, in general, the optimization improved the total utilization and performance of
PS Service.

This feature is compatible with existing weight-based features such as QoS and
GPRS/EGPRS Load Optimization. And is recommended to be rolled out in the network.
