What is Listening?

Listening is and art, a skill and a


discipline.
As an art, listening guides a persons
mind so he/she can proceed with order
and ease and without error in
constructive activity of reading writing
and speaking.
What is Listening?

As a skill, it is an ability gained by


knowledge and constant practice.
And as a discipline, it has a purpose, and
involves a critical reaction of the brain to
the sound waves which travel through the
ears; then goes beyond hearing.
One not only hears but listens in order to
learn.
Its Importance
Nature gave us two ears
And only one mouth so we
Could listen twice as much
As we speak
A class can never become a wholesome
and dynamic community unless teacher and
students develop the habit of deep, respectful
listening to one another.
Its Kinds

1. Action level
This level contemplates of an emergency,
accident or any situation that demands
immediate response, action or attention.

2. Information level
This level includes listening to lectures, speech
discussion , debate, conversations, news or reports.
In fact, this classification the most and
frequently used or experienced.

3. Entertainment Level
This classification involves relaxing ambiance.
It may include listening to music, comedy show or
any entertainments that gives listening, pleasure or
enjoyment.

To listen effectively, a listener must assume

1. Firstly, a listener must see to it that he/she is
aware of al carriers of meaning, that is, other
than words, there are some elements that
carry meaning such as stress/ emphasis,
rhythm, intonation and body language;
2. Secondly, a listener may add non-spoken
information that the speaker assumes the
former can;
3. thirdly, a listener must be willing to predict a
content organization of lectures or speech by
listening and writing down key concepts; and

4. finally, a listener must constantly evaluate what


he/she is listening to in order that he/she can
differentiate what is relevant or irrelevant, and the
main point from supporting detail.

The develop efficient listening habits, a
listener must do the following processes:

1.Concentration on the task of listening


This task requires thinking. The
thinking listener must focus his/her attention
to keep face with the speaker by critically
keeping track of the main idea and
organization of the speech.

2. Guarding against prejudice
An attitude of openness must characterize a
listener or he/she must not be biased against the
speaker and his/her speech prior to delivery.

3. Non-criticism of the speaker


Listening must focus on what the speaker says.
Mannerism, physical appearance and awkward
moves not be the cause for distraction, and defeat
concentration

4. Avoidance of emotional reactions


A listener may disagree what the speaker
is saying. He/She must hold his/her
disagreement until the proper time comes.

5. Focusing on the main idea


A critical listener looks for the central idea
or ideas of the lecture or speech. He/She
analyzes how the speaker organizes, supports,
clarifies or illustrates his/her main point. And

5. Taking down notes


The point of the pen is wiser than
anybodys mind.
An active listener must note down significant
or important points of the lecture or speech
while listening so that he/she may have
something to review for keeps.
