Classifying Plants Vocabulary

Botanist
A botanist is a scientist who studies plants.
Botanist classify and organize plants based on
their unique characteristics.

Remember in our Look Fors we mentioned Vascular and

Nonvascular which are plant characteristics.

They observe, study very carefully, and

then classify all types of plants! The science
of plants is known as botany.
Classifying Plants
As previously discussed, we know that
animals can be classified based on certain
characteristics such as backbone, warm-
blooded or cold-blooded, fur, scales, and
what they eat. But how are plants
classified?

Like animals, plants are divided into two

main groups. Then these two groups are
divided into smaller groups. Think about
vertebrates and invertebrates and now for
plants we vascular and nonvascular.
Classifying Plants
So when classifying plants they
can either be Vascular or
Nonvascular.
Vascular Plants means: having
transporting tubes They have a system
of tubes that carry water to the plant.

Nonvascular Plants means not having

transporting tubes. They absorb the
water.
 Vascular Plants:
1. Have a system of tubes that carry water.
2. Have roots, stems, and leaves.
3. Grow and stand taller.

 What to Look For
Vascular look fors:
have vascular tissue transport tubes
most have tissue in their roots, stems, and leaves
tubes carry water and food
grow stand up tall

Non-Vascular look fors :

dont have vascular tissue transport tubes
absorb water directly through the surface of their cells
live in moist areas
much smaller than vascular plants
