THERMAL CONDUCTANCE RELATION

BETWEEN STEEL AND CONCRETE- GHOJEL

22nd March 2017

THERMAL CONDUCTANCE
INVESTIGATION:
Ghojel has done experimental and analytical
investigation of interfacial thermal conductance
of unloaded circular steel tubes filled with normal
concrete.
Experimental measurements and inverse heat
conduction analysis are used to estimate the
thermal conductance as a function of steel
temperature.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP :

3
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP :
5 thermocouples with steel protective sheathes of 3mm
dia and 300mm length were drilled axially in the
concrete cross sectional plane.
4 thermocouples were used to measure the surface
temperatures
The tube was heated in 15kW electric furnace, using 3
heating elements, one on top and other two on the
sides of specimen.
The specimen was heated from ambient temperature to
900 degrees centigrade.
4
NUMERICAL MODEL :
INTEMP software is implemented, that solves non-linear inverse heat
conduction problems. For the input given, it checks the FE mesh,
calculates heat flux w.r.t time at the nodes, and comparison of
measured and calculated temperatures.

The input data consists of a

2D FE mesh representing the cross section of modelled object
Known time-temperature histories at any number of node locations
from the experimental setup.
Thermal and physical properties of the materials in the model, which
can vary with temperature.

METHODOLOGY OF CALCULATING
THERMAL CONDUCTANCE :-
Step
1:- Initial Contact Conductance Calculation
A heat transfer model without interface is modelled, and
temperatures are calculated at the nodes
From the time-temperatures obtained, INTEMP program is used to
calculate the heat flux at the nodes.
Initial values of conductance are calculated using the following
relation

where , are element sizes and , are conductivities of steel and

concrete respectively.

METHODOLOGY OF CALCULATING
THERMAL CONDUCTANCE :-
Step
2:- Refined Contact Conductance Calculation

The estimated contact conductance values w.r.t temperature of

steel are used in the model with interface element of 0.1 inch
(2.45 mm) thickness.
The conductance along tangential direction of interface element,
the density and heat capacity are considered to be zero.
INTEMP was run repeatedly, starting from first value of .
For each iteration, the flux values are calculated. And iterations
are repeated till a flux value, which minimized the least square of
difference of calculated temperature and measured temperature.
