The roof structure projects up to a
height of 65 m, and is designed as a
steel prismatic shell on a basis of
triangular facets.
S
The total diameter of the roof is 310
T m lengthways and 290 m across.
R
U The image of a bamboo forest is
created by the double row of steel
C supports, where every other
T support in the inner row is
connected with the concrete
U structure of the undulating
R upper tier, thus carrying the
E vertical loads of the spectator
seating.
S
The steel tubes, which are up to
32 m in length, range from 55 cm to
80 cm, varying in accordance with
their differing static loads.

A membrane roof suspended from ARPIT
With a diameter of 230 m and
cantilevering of 54 m on each side of
the stands, the roof is carried by 36
pairs of cables whose pre-
tensioning is brought together via a
S circular double tension ring of
strand-bundle cables above the
T pitch.
R
Though the supports for the roof

structure stand inside the rows of
C stand supports, they are completely
T separate from the concrete
structure in order to cater for
U independent movements in the large
R roof.
E The steel tubes, which are up to 32
S m in length, differ qualitatively
according to their loadbearing
behavior and function.

In diameter, they range from 550

The horizontal stiffening of the
structure and drainage of the roof
membrane is likewise provided by
special supports.

S Particular attention was also paid to

the efficient use of materials during
T the design of the roof structure of the
R Baoan stadium, as a fundamental
principle of sustainable building.
U
C This is why a membrane roof
T suspended from an outer frame was
selected to cover the seating areas
U the ratio of material used to the
R surface covered constitutes an
ingenious optimum for wide-span
E structures.
S
With a diameter of 230 m and
cantilevering of 54 m on each side of
the stands, the roof is carried by 36
pairs of cables whose pretensioning

is brought together via a circular SHRIYA
double tension ring of ARPIT
Placed at various heights, the
tension rings are linked together by
18 m-high air supports, and together
with the compression ring at the
edge of the stadium produce a
S balance of forces on the principle of
T a spoked wheel.

R The geometry of the roof above the

U grandstands has been
accommodated by introducing an
C expressive series of folded
T triangular framework, arranged
U along radial main axes
corresponding to the grid of the main
R building.
E
The segmental roof structures are
S dissolved into a folded plate
structure, where the primary
members are the edge members
of the folded plate structure.
The deviation forces are transferred ARJUN
outwards via upper and lower SHRIYA
ARPIT
The secondary members of the
folded plate structure also provide
the local stability of the primary
members and the supports for
sheeting. The secondary members
S divide the primary members into
equal parts.
