OTN (Optical Transport Network) architecture is defined in the ITU-T G.872

Recommendation, while the ITU-T G.709 Recommendation defines its
interface in terms of Optical Transport Hierarchy (OTH)

The principles of this Architectures are implemented in Alcatel-Lucent WDM

Equipment starting from 1626LM Rel2.0

All the others Alcatel-Lucent WDM Equipment managed in 1354RM Rel (NR 8.1)
dont support the OTN architecture, so their modeling in 1354RM is called
pre-OTN modeling.

so it is valid for:

1686WM: all the release managed by 1354RM (NR 8.1)

1696MS: all the release managed by 1354RM (NR 8.1)

OTS Physical Connection or OTS Trail is the section between two consecutive OTS
Ports. It is treated as a Physical Connection
OMS Trail is the section between two consecutive OMS Trail Termination Points.
OCH Link Connection is the section between two consecutive single lambda accesses
of the multiplexers for the same optical channel number at the client side of the mux.
OCH Trail is the section between the coloured sides (OCH Trail Termination Points or
CAP Connection Access Point) of two consecutive Transponders managing the same
lambda.
Client Link Connection is the section between two consecutive Transponders managing
the same lambda, in the point where they process the signal in electrical format
(Client Connection Termination Point)
Client Path is the section between the two SDH (or Data) ports communicating
through a WDMNetwork.

DWDM USED CHANNELS

Up to 32 DWDM channels (all in the C-band) can be transmitted by the

1696MS. Each channel is associated to a fixed wavelength chosen in the
third optical window (1550nm).
The 32 channels are separated into 2 parts : 16 long band channels (LB) and
16 short band channels (SB).
Each band is composed of 4 sets of 4 consecutive wavelengths. Each set is
separated from the adjacent sets by one unused channel.

DWDM NETWORK CONSTRUCTION

21 | March 2007 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2006, 2007

Network Construction and Connectivity discovery

In the following, a sequence of operations is presented in order to show

how the WDM network construction implies as side effect the discovery
of the OCH trails and related optical Client Paths.

Due the fact that RM has to discover the fixed connections in the NEs,

the raw connection is an intermediate description of a possible OCH

Trail or Client Path.

As soon as the discovery is successfully completed, the raw connection

is promoted, depending on the relevant layer, to an OCH Trail or a

Client Path.

22 | March 2007 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2006, 2007

Moving from Raw Connections to paths/trails

A raw connection is promoted to a OCH Trail / Optical Client Path:

When the raw connection becomes complete because of the implementation

of a new physical connection

When the raw connection is already complete (e.g. a trail previously moved

to raw-connection) and the operator performs the payload configuration of

one of the supporting (OTS or OPS) physical connections

When the raw connection becomes complete by adding a cross-connection or

a TP to an existing raw-connection (see OADM management).

23 | March 2007 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2006, 2007

Moving from paths/trails to raw connections

A Client Path is moved into a raw connection by:

- De-implementing, de-allocating and removing the path

- By removing the trail (all the operation of de-configuration, etc. are
automatically removed)

RM refuses de-implementation and removal of physical connections

when one or more Client Paths or OCH Trails supported by the physical

connection are present.

Management of 4xAny Data Path

42 | March 2007 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2006, 2007

Management of 4xAny Data Path

The architecture of 4XANY board is based on the concept of the virtual concatenation and on the

mapping of SDH on OTN:

The data traffic is mapped into VC-4 structures (virtually concatenated)

The VC-4s are groomed into a STM-16 structure

The STM-16 is transported through the optical network as RS Client Path

The 4XANY card can be:

Connected inside the 1696MS to the Transponder to carry the Data traffic on the RS signal
(STM-16) into the OTH network

Connected inside the 1696MS to the OPC card to perform the O-SNCP protection of the RS
client path in the OTH network

Connected inside the 1696MS directly to the MUX/DEMUX card, using a DWDM or CWDM SFP for
the SM-16 interface

4xANY Data Path Management

RM is in charge to consistently manage the Virtual Concatenation both in SDH and

WDM Networks (for Gbit Ethernet services that can be managed both by OMNS and
WDM NEs).

In fact a Gbit/s Ethernet service can be initiated/terminated in WDMnetwork

crossing the SDH network (or vice versa) so the supporting Virtual Concatenated
paths are to be coherently managed through the two types of transport technologies.

The other Data services (FE, ESCON, FDDI, Digital Video.. ) are initiated and
terminated only in 4xANY card, but they could cross an SDH network as well. Also in
this case, the supporting Virtual concatenated paths are to be coherently managed
through the two types of transport networks

SETTING UP DATA PATHS WITH 4xANY

6
46 | March 2007 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2006, 2007
Procedure

Prerequisites

NE and OTS physical connections between them created; NAPs uploaded

4xANY boards equipped and configured in the NEs

Procedure

1. 4xANY board directly connected to Mux/Demux by a Colored STM-16 SFP equipped

in the board?

YES:

1a: In both the Endpoint NEs, manually create the SDH/WDM interworking Physical
Connection between the STM-16 port of the 4xANY board and the MUX/DEMUX: a SDH
STM-16 virtual physical connection is automatically set up between the two 4xANY
boards

between the STM-16 port of the 4xANY board and the OGPI B&W port of the
Transponder (see the Chapter Network Construction: DWDM in this
Module)
2b: create the Cross-connections in the transponders by the Connectivity
Tool (see the Chapter Connectivity Tool in this Module).

4. Create a Ethernet or Data Path between the relevant NAPs belonging to

the 4xANY of the end-point NEs

48 | March 2007 All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2006, 2007

Procedure: Step 1a 4xANY connected to Mux/Demux

Interworking between the SDH STM-16 port of the 4xANYboard (Port#5) and
the Port of the relevant Mux/Demux corresponding to the desired optical signal
frequency
