What do you feel if you dive deeply in the water?

I feel hard to breath. I am close to die.

PRESSURE in LIQUID

A liquid exerts pressure on

its container in all directions.
The pressure increases when
the depth and density of
liquid increases
Facts:

P = hg
Pressure, P is directly proportional to
- density,
- depth, h
( g = constant)

Depth,
h Question:
1. What happen when the depth of
water in container decreases?

Distance, s
Example:

a) Calculate;

i) the pressure exerted by the water at the bottom.

of the container.
P = hg = 1000(0.4)9.8
= 3920 Nm-2

40 cm ii) the pressure exerted by oil at the bottom.

of the container.
P = hg = 860(0.4)9.8
= 3371 Nm-2
water oil
b) Why is the pressure of water and oil are
water = 1000 oil =
kgm-3 860 kgm-3 different at the same depth?
Because the density of water is higher than oil
Situation:
a) What inference can you make?
Pressure depends on depth
b) State one appropriate hypothesis?
The pressure increases as the depth
increases
c) Describe an experiment to test your
hypothesis.
Aim:
To study the relationship between pressure
and depth
Manipulated v/b
Depth, h
Responding v/b
Pressure, P
Fixed v/b
Density of liquid
Procedure:
1. The apparatus are set up as figure.
2. The funnel is moved for depth, h = 2
cm. (h is measured using meter
ruler)
3. Pressure = Length, P (differential
length of manometer) is measured
by use a meter ruler.
4. The steps are repeated for h = 4 cm,
6 cm, 8 cm and 10 cm.

What happens when the funnel is
moved down into the liquid?
Manometer shows the pressure, P
increases

Sketch a graph to shows

Why are water tanks placed in high places?
v=0
Distance between surface of water in
tanker and pipe, h is big
The pressure of water in the pipe, P is high
The water that flows out from the pipe has
a higher velocity
So, the water could be supplied to the
consumer at the ground
h
State a change of energy when water
flows to the ground?
