Hardware Implementation
Hardware Implementation
There are basically four units which are used for successful implementation
of the hardware circuit:-

1. The Half-bridge Driver unit

2. The Power Circuit unit

3. The Power Supply unit

4. The Microcontroller unit i.e. TMS320F28377S launchpad

The Half-Bridge Driver Unit
The half-bridge driver unit comprises of two opto-isolated gate driver ICs
i.e. HCPL-316J.
Each of the driver ICs is used to drive both the upper and lower MOSFET
switches in one leg of the inverter alternatively.
The half-bridge driver unit receives gate pulse with frequency 20kHz and a
dc supply of 5V.
Additionally, two separate supplies of 15V dc each are given to the unit as
VCC for the ICs to function.
The Half-Bridge Driver Unit

Figure-2 : Half-Bridge Driver Circuit unit

Output of half-bridge driver unit
The half-bridge driver unit will give
output in the form of square wave
according to the frequency set by the
controller.
This square wave will become gate
pulses for the MOSFET switches.
As shown in the figure, the pulses above
are given to the upper switch while the
pulses below are given to the lower

switch.
The Delay in Output
There is a small noticeable delay during the transition of upper and lower
switches into their alternative states.

This delay becomes necessary during the transition states to avoid the
short-circuiting of switches in one leg.

There appears a dead time, in which both the switches remain open and
henceforth switch on or off according to the pulses given.

The Power Circuit unit
The power circuit unit is of utmost importance in the project.

The power circuit unit mainly consists the two MOSFETs i.e. IRF740
which forms one leg of the inverter unit.

It receives gate pulses for the MOSFETs to operate, produced from the
half-bridge driver unit.

24V DC bus supply is given to the unit which is used for the inverting
process, according to the frequency decided by the controller.

The Power Supply unit
The power supply units play an integral role in the project as they are
needed in every other units for their operations.
Here, there are total eight power supply units to be used, out of which
six are 15V units, one is 5V unit and one is 24v unit.
Six 15V units are used to supply as VCC to the driver ICs in the half-
bridge driver units.
The 5V unit is used to supply the driver units for their operation.
The 24V unit is used as a common dc bus supply to the power circuits.
